Magi

There is not much known of exactly who they were or how many of them, however traditions lean towards three based on the number of gifts presented;
The magi were most likely not Jewish, based on the fact they had to inquire as to the location of Christ’s birth;
There is no monetary value or quantity set on the gifts, however it is known that gold - the currency of the time -, frankincense and myrrh - often used in religious ceremonies - were reserved for important figures;
Here’s what we need to understand about the Magi - they were not Jewish, religious or knowledgeable about the law - yet they were drawn to Jesus.

Herod

Herod - known as Herod the Great - became king of Judaea in 40 BC;
The first part of his rule was very positive - even with his iron-fisted, no tolerance for opposition ruling style;
He improved the temple beyond any ever known, he cared for the Jewish people and their traditions;
He even stopped the creation of engraved images - idolatry;
However all of this changed starting in approximately 13 - 4 BC, his sympathy for the Jewish people ended.

Pulling

As we continue this story we find a tension that develops - seeking and resistance - that tension still exists today between believers and non-believers;
The Magi were seeking the One, a Child, that was destined to change the world;
They would travel whatever the path required to fine this King, to worship Him and yes even protect Him (v.12);
Herod was resistant to the One, a new King, someone that would challenge his authority;
Herod did not seek to worship but destroy this Child (v. 16);
Where are you today - seeking or resisting?
