I’d like 2 read Matt 5:14-16; Matt 28:18-20

Matthew 5:14–16 ESV

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 28:18–20 ESV

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

B. A light to shine

a. Why is light so important?

A lit city is a beacon 2 draw folks 2 the safety o the city

In the same way, when our light shines, we draw our unchurched frnds, fam, neighbors, etc. 2 the safety found in Jesus.

b. Ur light shines when u live out & articulate Hope, Joy, Peace & Love

Ur light shines when u live hopeful b4 ur un-churched frnds, fam, neighbors, etc. & tell ‘em that our living hope is Jesus & an eternity spent w/him

ur light shines when we live joyfully 2gether & tell folks that our joy comes from the reality that we r saved from our sin through Jesus’ death & resurrection

ur light shines when we live peacefully 2gether & tell people o the peace w/ God that we have because Jesus paid the penalty of our sin & that we r now in right rel. w/God forever.

ur light shines when we love 1another and tell folks that we love because God 1st loved us & sent Jesus 2 the earth born o a virgin, lived a sinless life, died a sinners death 2 pay 4 our sins

c. What good is Hope, Joy, Peace & Love if we don’t share it??

It’s like putting a light under a basket: we render the light useless

When we don’t live & share the gospel o Hope, Joy, Peace & Love we render our Christianity useless

d. Illust. Candle lighting – (turn off the lights)

1. this unlit sanctuary is like the world: dark… void o light

2. but look what happens when we add just 1 light

3. (light more) & look what happens when we share our light & that light shines through others?

4. Sing “this little light o mine” while others spread the light by lighting candles

5. This is Jesus’ mission 4 us: shine the light of Hope, Joy, Peace & Love lived out & articulated
