We Saw His Glory (John 1, Luke 2, Matthew 2)

Introduction

During our Christmas Eve service we read and reread John 1:14, which says…

As we read and reread this verse that night, I was think of how power that whole verse is, but specifically that middle part, which we might overlook—the part that say, “…and we saw His glory…”

What does John mean?

John says, “We witnessed it! We witnessed His glory! This child born of a virgin and laid in a feeding trough was filled with the ‘…glory as of the only begotten from the Father…’ and we laid eyes on Him!”

Now, of course, John saw glory of Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration…

Luke 9:28–29 NASB95

28 Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.

The glory of God within Jesus—the glory that was always His—shone through on the Mount of Transfiguration.

Is that what John referred to when he wrote in John 1:14, “we saw His glory”?

Perhaps John was referring to the divine miracles that Jesus worked or the divine truths that He taught or perhaps it was just the day to day life of perfect grace and truth that Jesus lived—a life that John spent about three years watching up close as a close disciple of Jesus.

But there were some who saw the glory within Jesus even before the Mount of Transfiguration, before the miracles, before the teaching, even before the daily living of grace and truth—and it those witnesses that we want to call on this morning.
