I was laying in bed last week when god gave me this message i was in that twilight stage half awake and half asleep and i found this prayer going on repeat in my mind How do we over come sin “ Praying that I may have the desire to, that I may have the ability to that it may glorify you” I woke up at 430 had to write it down in my sketch book it was clear that God had a message for me to deliver That it would Glorify Him
As we leave the season of Christmas and begin to transition to the season of the new year. Many of folks will start their year with a new years resolution some will be to go on a diet to loose 10 pounds some will be to quit smoking some will be to limit the news ect but what if ours was that we would take a real spiritual step this year to work on overcoming the sins in our lives that have held us back from a deeper walk with our lord Jesus . And this will be mine and I pray it will be yours aswell
Overcoming Sin in ones life is probably one of the greatest tasks of the Christian, Some believe that there must be a true conversion to considered a true disciple of Christ I am of that option, Now there are those that discredit the work of repentance there argument is that it is no longer needed under the covenant of Grace. First I want to warn you while this sound good sound easy to follow and has many astray because it is not biblically supported.
So the first thing I want to show you in scripture this morning is why repentance and a change must take place why we can no longer continue in the life we knew before christ
Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
Jesus preached on repentance so did the profits of old yes true we no longer live according to the law but according to grace we shall not continue in the ways of our former selves for the sake of pleasure least it tarnish the works on the cross Paul addresses this thought in Romans 6:1-2
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”
Look back in Luke Jesus proclaims that repentance will be preached all over the world
Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.
So here we see while we are in a covenant of Grace and not the law Repentance is still measured and expected umoungst the true followers of Christ
So what Do we Do,,,,,,, When it is so easy to continue in sin and so hard to turn from it. How do we over come it
First thing is we must Pray for the desire to
You see as fallen creatures our desire our will is limited to be the enimes of God our desire is wickedness it is sinful only by the Grace of The Lord Jesus can any of us have another desire for if it were left up to our own abilities our own strength our own desire none would be saved for we were all enemies of God
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” (Ezekiel 36: 26-27)
ALL SIN BEGINS IN THE HEART. Someone said, “The heart of the human problem is the problem of the human heart”. Sin causes hearts to grow hard, especially continual and unrepentant sin. Jesus taught, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness” (Mark 7:21-22). In the Scriptures various aspects of human anatomy are used to define the whole person, but the most frequently used is heart. Often, the heart refers to the soul of a human being that controls the mind, will and emotions.
“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
1 Samuel 16:7 says “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
The heart represents the total response of a person to life around him or her and to the religious and moral demands of God. Hardness of heart thus describes a negative condition in which the person ignores, spurns, or rejects the gracious offer of God to be a part of his or her life. The Scriptures speak on this in a variety of ways and tell us emphatically that God weighs the motives of the heart.
In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of stubborn hearts, hardened hearts, hearts that are far from God. He also speaks of evil in the heart. Ultimately the hardness of the human heart can only be repaired by the grace of God. He can bring about the transformation that is so desperately needed. It is he who can restore us, by taking away our heart of stone and giving us a heart of flesh (Eze 11:18-21). If we need a new heart from God, we can have one through faith in the Lord Jesus. What indicates that need? As sinners, all of us need a new heart. We know God’s plan for change begins with regeneration and continues through sanctification. We need our minds renewed because we can be quickly taken captive by the world (Romans 12:2). Lasting change comes through the word of God and only God can change the heart. His grace is what teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age (Titus 2:11-13).
for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
in contrast
So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
teasches us those outside of christ cannot please god it is not about thier own strength or ability but on God he must first grant us the desire then grant us the ability to this is my next point
2, Pray that God would grant you the ability to overcome the Sin in your life
First you must want to overcome the sin next comes that you must be able to overcome the Sin in your life
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
we cannot do this alone by the strength on our back nor were we created to if we could we would boast how much better we are than some one else
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Repentance as is Faith is a gift of God granted by Him that no man may boast of his Good works but that all me may Boast of His great name
Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
notice Repentance was given some translations render it as granted repentance either way we see that it is not of our ability but a ability given as a gift by God
If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”
When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”
GIFT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GRANTED>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...
in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,
Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
He leads you . So here is my point as a fallen creature we cannot please God without Christ we cannot repent we cannot love as we should we cannot serve in a way that benefits the kingdom we cannot or we would or could boast about how great we are. But it is of God. these gifts are of God
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
He chose you
Ehp says before the world was ever created he chose you
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
So How do we overcome sin in our lives
Pray that God would give us the desire to
Pray that God would give you the ability to
And my last point That is may Glorify you “Him”
Everything that we do is to Glorify Him if it does not it misses the mark
To miss the mark is to Sin
That is one thing that really frightens me to sin is not always to be doing ugly thing like lieing stealing cheating killing drugs or alcohol abuse it sometimes can be to just miss the mark not do what was required of you. Not to do things to honor Him not to Give God thanks in all things this in its self can be sin
everything we do from repentance to loving our neighbors to mowing the grass to shopping at the store should Glorigy Him
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
everything we have everything we do must Glorify Him That we would bear witness to the world of His greatness
Not to brag or boast of our own selves but to brag about the Goodness of God.
So where are you in your walk have you struggled in your walk not knowing what to do with sin?
Have you even thought about it or have you just continued in it as you did in your former life
I say to you today
Pray that God would give you the desire an new heart one that chases after Him and His righteousness
pray that God would give you the ability to overcome sin, Look i know its hard I still struggle but I know we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength so Pray that he would grant you the desire and the ability
That it would Glorify Him
Not so that you can feel better about yourself or brag to others but that the darkness in your world would be transformed by the light that bears witness of Christ that is with in You
