Introduction and Welcome
Good Evening and welcome to Sunday Night Online.
I’m Pastor Joe Vivian and tonight we begin a new 4 week journey to examine and understand the common wrong teachings, or a better word and new word for you all-Heresies, that many believe in the church today.
We will examine these Heresies, wrong biblical teachings, through the lens of God’s Word and then will begin to see the solid truth of God’s Word and build on staying focused on that truth through correct beliefs.
We will be in 1 Timothy 1:3-7
Please mark your Bibles there for tonight’s teaching.
I want us to learn this Studies Key Verse. It comes out of Acts chapter 17.
Here it is:
11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.
Look at this verse:
Those that heard the Good News about Jesus Christ were excited to hear the news; however, they still searched, examined the scriptures, every day to find the truth.
They were investigators.
they listened to Paul.
They wanted to know more.
they wanted to grow closer to God.
Yet, they were still careful to read through God’s Word, they investigated , they carefully studied God’s Word to make surer all was true.
Again, this is what we will be focused on in the next 5 weeks.
I want to help to encourage each of you to study God’s Word on your own.
To get excited to listen to those who teach God’s Word.
And to investigate, examine what they taught you so as to grow closer to Him with Truth!

So let’s get started tonight on understanding a key Word:
Doctrine.
“The Truths of the Gospel as instructed through God’s Word.”
There are certain things that we think everyone should just know, but then our baby sister licks the dog and it becomes obvious that we need to teach her not to do that.
(Watch ELF clip…)
When Buddy the Elf left the North Pole to seek out his birth father in New York City, his adoptive father had to give him some important rules, “First off, if you see gum on the street, leave it there. It’s not free candy.”
The same is true in churches. We need some foundational truths to help us along the way.
There are lots of things that many older Christians think everyone should know, and it isn’t until someone starts saying or doing something that is against the Bible that we realize it is important to teach people good doctrine.
Many doctrines had to be written down and discussed because someone started to say they were a Christian but then taught something confusing or wrong.
Teaching

Let’s begin by reading
3 When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth.
4 Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God.
5 The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.
6 But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions.
7 They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.
When Paul wrote to Timothy, he wanted him to stick to the most basic and most important truths that are the foundation for all of Christianity.
We must be filled by the Holy Spirt with love!
That comes from a Pure Heart
A Clear Conscience
Genuine Faith
A love uncontaminated by focusing not only on you but putting others first and a faith that is not a counterfeit, but genuine and real!
As Christians, we agree on certain truths that are important to the Christian faith.
These truths aren’t just minor things, such as singing hymns or playing drums in the church band or whether the church should have pastors or elders.
These core truths, or doctrines, help define Christian belief and practice from that which is not Christian.
Some examples of these important truths are there only being one God in three persons (the Trinity), that Jesus was both fully God and fully man, that all people have sinned and are in need of Christ’s salvation, that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and that there will be a resurrection at the return of Christ.
Let me repeat those again:
Some examples of these important truths are there only being one God in three persons (the Trinity), that Jesus was both fully God and fully man, that all people have sinned and are in need of Christ’s salvation, that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and that there will be a resurrection at the return of Christ.
These are pillars that hold up the Christian faith.
These are truths of the Gospel that we should hold onto firmly.
The apostle Paul wants young pastor Timothy to avoid false doctrine (1 Timothy 1:3–7).
3 When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth.
Churches have always struggled with false doctrine and false teachers who teach something that is not in the Bible.
Paul is telling Timothy to speak up against the bad teachers that were influencing the church.
There were some Jewish groups who made a big deal about who you were related to (1 Timothy 1:4)
4 Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God.
and wanted people to follow all the rules of the law of Moses, for salvation.
The letter to Timothy gave a big picture of how many Jewish teachers were caught up in trying to live in the past and bringing great confusion to church members.
The truth about Jesus and salvation by grace, through faith, was getting overshadowed by these wrong beliefs.
When something is a false doctrine, the church has used the term heresy to separate it from correct doctrine.
Heresies can make people confused about what is really true and what is not.
This is why it is important that we study our Bibles so that we know what God really wants to say to us.
Even though we are all good at walking and we do it every day, we still sometimes trip over a crack in the sidewalk or rock on the trail; in the same way, even the very best teachers can sometimes make mistakes.
Every teaching should align with what God has told us through his Word.
Closing

Excellent.
I want to close with three points to apply.
First-
How are you not only reading God’s Word, but applying it into your life?
You hear me every week, we must Know Jesus and Live Like Jesus.
the more we spend time in God’s Word, the more we understand who God is and the more we become like Jesus.
That leads to the next application.
Second-
Do you take time to search God’s Word to make sure what is being taught to you is Truth?
I love to hear that you all go and study out what I’ve taught each week. That’s so awesome!
that means that you are not only excited to Know Jesus and Live Like Jesus, but your excitement spills over into knowing Him more!
Finally, this leads to our last application:
Third-
Are you filled by the Holy Spirt with love?
A Pure Heart
A Clear Conscience
Genuine Faith
A love uncontaminated by focusing not only on you but putting others first and a faith that is not a counterfeit, but genuine and real!
Let’s read through and begin to hide this truth in our hearts:
11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.
Doctrine.
“The Truths of the Gospel as instructed through God’s Word.”
Excellent!
Listen to those who teach you God’s word with excitement and spend time searching the scripture to see if it’s true and points back to the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
