Luke 22:14–20 KJV 1900
14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
I stand here today having pastored many years
Having conducted many communion services
Having taught many lessons about what communion is and why it is important.
BUT I come with a different perspective on it than ever before.
The First New Testament Communion takes place at the time of the last Passover meal.
Passover was celebrated to remember that God Brought Israel out of Egypt.
Out of sin, out of the world and into covenant relationship with God.
NT Communion is about remembering that God brought you out of Sin, out of the world and into covenant relationship with God!
Over the years, this has been taught in a way to make ppl fear, seeming to present and impossible mark for partaking.
Without a doubt we have to be repented...
But communion done right should launch us into greater relationship it Him
Important in the early church
Done in remembrance of the death of Jesus
Daily
To understand Communion you have to study 1 Cor 10 and 11 which gives us the complete picture of Communion
God sets the table with 7 critical aspects of Communion
Think of a table place settings...
The plates, forks, spoons, napkins, glasses
1. Remember the saving work of Jesus
1 Corinthians 11:24–26 KJV 1900
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
First and most thought of aspect of communion is the remembering of calvary.
Sacrifice for sin and our delivery from sin.
Payment for sin and forgivness for sin
His death for our life
Crushing of Satan and the empowering of the Saints
Because of this, when we take the Lords’ supper in a moment, we are giving thanks !
2. Fellowship with Jesus Christ
1 Corinthians 10:16 KJV 1900
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
Communion with God - Adam and Eve in the garden
Celebrate the connection we have with our savior
Because I died when I repented… like he did
Because I was buried with Him in baptism… like he was
Because I am alive… like he us… in Him through the power of the Holy Ghost living in me
I HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM!
3. Equality in the body of Christ
1 Corinthians 10:17 KJV 1900
17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
We are all equal at the foot of the cross
Fellowship with each other
Healing of wounds
Forgive each other
4. Seperation
1 Corinthians 10:20–22 KJV 1900
20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. 21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. 22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
God separates us to His purpose.
No worship of God on Sunday service and yourself, job, hobbies on Monday.
Fresh commitment to Him
5. Purification
1 Corinthians 11:28–31 KJV 1900
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
Time of self examination
If you don’t you will be weak, sick and even die!
Confess and repent
What is purification at the end of this?
It’s a process!
6. Proclamation
1 Corinthians 11:26 KJV 1900
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Your life sings of God’s mercy and grace!
7. Establishes the Kingdom
Matthew 26:29 KJV 1900
29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
As you come under the power of communion, it brings everything around you under the same power!
What is the response to communion?
Humility and thankfulness as I remember calvary
Fellowship
Equality
Seperation
Purification
Proclamation
Kingdom

COMMUNION:
Who receives?
If you have the Holy Ghost
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
1 Corinthians 11:23–24 KJV 1900
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Eat the bread
1 Corinthians 11:25–26 KJV 1900
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Drink of the cup
