Christmas is a time of lights. We are the Griswalds of Pine Valley. Some people decorate for Christmas, we overdecorate. We have lights everywhere. We even have singing rocks this year. Give us a few years and we will have ride through Christmas tours. its insanity. But one thing I know about Christmas is that anything can potentially be “decorated” for Christmas. It’s really simple… Just add lights. add lights to a normal Fence - Boom Christmas fence. lights on shrubs typical Shrubs shazam christmas shrub. Mailbox - boom Christmas mailbox - Junk car - boom Christmas car. just add lights. Christmas and lights go hand and hand. Because Christ is the light of the World. The bible has much to say about Jesus being the light.
John’s understanding of Jesus as the Light of the world...
John 1:4-9
John 1:4–9 ESV
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
John 3:19-21
John 3:19–21 ESV
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
John 8:12
John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 9:5
John 9:5 ESV
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
John 12:35-36
John 12:35–36 ESV
35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
John 12:46
John 12:46 ESV
46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
Jesus, the light of the world, makes us into children of the light.
What does light represent in John’s mind and in the bible?
LIFE: So darkness represents death
John 1:4-5
John 1:4–5 ESV
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
“Life” - Zoe = denotes in Greek the physical vitality of organic beings, animals, men and also plants.2 Life is understood, not as a thing, but as vitality, as the nature or manner which characterizes all living creatures as such
“In reality, the difference between Biological life and Spiritual life is so important that I am going to give them two distinct names. The Biological sort which come to us through Nature, and which (like everything else in Nature) is always tending to run down and decay so that it can only be kept up by incessant subsidies from Nature in the form of air, water, food, etc. is Bios. The Spiritual life which is in God from all eternity, and which made the whole natural universe is Zoe. Bios has, to be sure, a certain shadowy or symbolic resemblance to Zoe: but only the sort of resemblance there is between a photo and a place, or statue and a man. A man who changed from having Bios to having Zoe would have gone through as big a change as a statue which changed from being a carved stone to being a real man. And that is precisely what Christianity is about. This world is a great sculptor’s shop. We are the statues and there is a rumor going around that some of us are some day going to come to life (p. 159).” Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
Genesis 1:1-4
Genesis 1:1–4 ESV
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
Psalm 13:3
Psalm 13:3 ESV
3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
GOODNESS of God: So darkness represents evil
John 3:19-21
John 3:19–21 ESV
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
James 1:17
James 1:17 ESV
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
Acts 26:18
Acts 26:18 ESV
18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
Ephesians 5:8 ESV
8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
Ephesians 5:11-14
Ephesians 5:11–14 ESV
11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
2 things you don’t talk about with people..
politics and religion - but why?-
1.) politics reveals our societal morality - the laws we impose upon others.
religion reveals is our personal morality. - the laws we impose upon ourselves.
and specifically specifics about religion reveals our idols our deep loves.
Vance Havner shares a story about a couple who always came to church together back in the 50s and the lady would come in and love the preaching. She wanted to hear more. She couldn’t get enough. Bu the man wouldn’t dare step inside the church. He sat in the car every Sunday and waited on his wife. As he explained it in his sermon the man didn’t want to come in lest he be exposed.
Most every person who leaves the church today possibly has a head problem… they may have doubts. But the all inevitably have a heart problem. This is what the verdict is… men loved darkness rather than light.
TRUTH: So darkness represents lies
John 8:12
John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Psalm 119:105
Psalm 119:105 ESV
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:130
Psalm 119:130 ESV
130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.
Jesus represents light in the same way as a lighthouse represents reality for the boat captain. although you may not see or notice the rocks they are there. The water is moving shifting and changing the rocks are solid. Jesus is not only the light that shines on the rock he is the rock itself. He is the one who doesn’t change. every thing is changing.
So the title of this message is lit, no cap.
many of you have no idea what that means. This is a type of language that confuses you. its called gen z language.
This is my meager attempt at Gen z language. I admittedly don’t get it, but I have a few gen zer’s in my household and so I enjoy their company at times and would hope that they would listen to the sermons and not tune out. And I hope that even though their language isn’t like my language that I could communicate the unchanging truth to them. But that’s not really why this is the title. It’s not really a lame attempt to be cool. I used to be cool but something changed. I started growing old at some point. I started loosing cool points several years back so I have no hope at that. While this title looms like a cheap attempt to grab attention of the younger generation it’s really not that at all it’s a way for me to tell you that everything changes. Languages morph words take on new nuances and meanings.
For example:
Lit = exciting or popin’
This used to mean lighting a match or a fire or a winston, or a Christmas tree. So the term has to do with illumination.
Our yard is lit up for christmas
Our house is lit up for christmas
They took the term and placed it within the context of an excitement, a feeling, a happy vibe...
“That sermon was lit bruh. it was fire!” simply means - I liked it. It was good. “I was pickin’ up what you were laying down.”
No Cap = means your not lying
It means there are no exaggerations. There are no capital letters to try to over exaggerate or stretch the truth.
It means actuality, integrity, truth, reality.
So although the title is admittedly awkward for me to say; that’s entirely the point.
The title is meant to draw the younger generation’s attention to the fact that words change, terminology changes, trends change, culture changes, your feelings change but the word of the Lord will last forever.
“The grass withers, the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord lasts forever.”
It’s really hard to know this especially at a young age. I remember thinking that the people I needed to empress the most are those people I knew at Westside Middle School or Northwest High school. But I hardly see most of those people anymore because things change.
As a younger person its hard to realize this so we put too much weight on moving targets. That’s the problem. Putting too much emphasis on things that are constantly changing, In flux. For example we may allow our current mood or vibe sway us in the moment to make a poor decision that will affect our future in negative ways.
So the Greek philosopher Heraclitus (hair –uh –klight –us) was right…
“no man ever steps in the same river twice?” That everything in the universe is changing.
That change is the only constant in the universe. So I ask you. What can you put your weight on? What will support the weight of your identity? The immutable one.
The rock, The word. The ever faithful one. The Truth. The Light of the Word.
That’s what immanuel is all about.
This is what Christmas is about.
God comes into the world to shine a light into darkness, and to light us up.
In Christ were lit. No Cap.
PRESENCE of God: So darkness represents absence of God’s manifest presence
John 12:44-46
John 12:44–46 ESV
44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
Isaiah 60:19
Isaiah 60:19 ESV
19 The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
Psalm 27:1
Psalm 27:1 ESV
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Immanuel. God with us. This is incredible news. It means that God cares. It means that God saves. It means that God loves. It also means that God knows and sympathizes.

What does it mean to be a person of the light?

To follow the LORD of light
Jesus is the light of the world
John 8:12
John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
A light to the Jews
Matthew 5:17-18
Matthew 5:17–18 ESV
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
“Note the qualities that Jesus attributes to the Word of God, referenced as “the Law and the Prophets”: 1) The Word is everlasting; it will outlast the natural world. 2) The Word was written with intent; it was meant to be fulfilled. 3) The Word possesses plenary authority; even the smallest letter of it is established. 4) The Word is faithful and trustworthy; “everything” it says will be accomplished.” -
“Jesus came to fulfill the predictions of the prophets, who had long foretold that a Savior would one day appear. He came to fulfill the ceremonial law, by becoming the great sacrifice for sin, to which all the Old Testament offerings had ever pointed. He came to fulfill the moral law, by yielding to it a perfect obedience, which we could never have yielded - and by paying the penalty for our breaking of it with His atoning blood, which we could never have paid.” - J.C. Ryle

1 John 1:5-10
1 John 1:5–10 ESV
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
