Introduction

Many of us could admit the circumstances we currently face today is not what we expected when 2020 was ushered into existence. Many of us mapped out our new years resolutions knowing they wouldn’t last but a month or two. Many of us know family and friends who said, “I’m coming to church and roughly five weeks later, you won’t see them again until Easter. No one told us that we would be in a political nightmare. A president whose base is far right extremists who sole purpose is to ensure that minorities don’t advance. They do everything possible to ensure that the “good ole boy’ system stay in place and only the rich stay in power and yet that have convince “poor white folks in the trailer park that they are better than black folks who live in the suburbs when we all have issues and the potential to be republican one day and democratic the next day.
No one told us that Covid-19 would take away so many of our loved ones. No one told us that so many would be on beds of affliction. No one told us that we would lose great leaders and preachers of great magnitude. No one even told us that we would be conducting our worship services on Facebook and Zoom. The food lines are getting longer. Unemployment is going through the roof. Front line employees are tired and wore out. People have waxed cold and gave up on themselves, society and they have given up on God.
With so much chaos and calamity in 2020, I believe some of you are in these shoes. Some of you may question, “Where is Jesus” with all this confusion. I’m distraught, things are disorderly, and now I’m devastated. Brothers and Sisters, I want to share with you today. Despite the challenges we are facing today, Jesus is still on the boat.

Context

When we examine the context, Jesus has called the disciples. He has cast out demons, preached in the temples, He is teaching the disciples, and faced opposition from Jewish leaders. Jesus has conducted so much ministry that now he is worn out and decided to get on the boat to get some rest and go to the other side

Verse 35-36

On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him

Mark vividly paints the portrait for his audience and for us today that life can be ruthless. Ministry can be ruthless. There will be times will seem normal and there are times you will have to still away. In this life, transition may be frequent but when Jesus, gives us an assignment, we must be obedient to his instructions and often times; don’t expect others to cosign and be prepared to lose some friends.

Verse 37

And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up

Following Jesus will cost you. Your life is on the line. You will find yourself in some predicaments
How do I know you will find yourself in some predicaments; because, Jesus was on boat with the disciples in the Sea of Galilee. Now if you know anything about the Sea of Galilee. It was 680 ft below the level of the Mediterranean. The lake is calm, clear and pristine. Despite its beauty, because of the location, it was liable to sudden storms. The cool air rushing down the gorges with great violence and tossing the waters in tumultuous billows. Can you imagine how distraught and how terrified the disciples were

Verse 38

Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing

Even with Jesus on the boat, they felt as if they had no options. Not only do they feel as if they have not options, but they accuse Jesus of not being who he said he was. Brothers and sisters, “Storms will expose faithlessness”. Having faith does not limit God, but faithlessness, will limit you.

Verse 39

And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.

Despite the disciples faithlessness, Jesus dealt with the issue

Verse 40

And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? How is it that you have no faith?

Jesus rebukes the disciples with two questions that should be taken literally that you must ask yourself. What is holding you back. Why don’t you believe me

Verse 41

They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?

Despite their rebuke, their fear turned into awestruck, and yet they still did not acknowledge Jesus as God, but as man

Practical Application

1 Now faith is the aassurance of things bhoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the men of old bgained approval.

3 By faith we understand that the aworlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible

Our faith leads us to maturity to handle the assignments given by God. Faith allows you to participate in God’s plan even when you don’t know what the plan is. Brothers and sisters its a cost to follow Jesus. No matter what our circumstances may be, the trials of life should produce the fruit of Joy. We can not be used unless we truly believe that Jesus is with us in our assignments. There will be some folk that are watching our every move, there will be some that will attempt to hinder progress. There will be some storms that will rise unexpectedly and when they rise up your faith must be activated
Illustrate the storm, the irony of Jonah

Closing

24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever

David faced the Goliath, but it was him, who kept him from stumbling
Moses and Israelites went through the Red Sea, but it was him, who kept him from stumbling
Meshach, Shadrach, and Abendigo, was in the fiery furnace, but it was him, who kept them from stumbling
Daniel was in the lions den, but it was Him who kept him from stumbling
Who is him?
