Matthew 9:14–17 NASB95
14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, asking, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 “But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. 17 “Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus here is using mini-parable or illustration. Jesus is the master of this.
John’s disciples come to Jesus ask ask him about a tradition or ritual of fasting.
Jesus doesn’t condemn or abolish fasting but says in essence we don’t just need to do thing for doing things sake but we ought to understand the times and the seasons that we are living in.
The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they?
But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.
There will be a day for fasting but right now you should be eating from the bread of life, I am the bread of life.
John 6:56–58 NASB95
56 “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 “As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 “This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.”
In that day they will mourn.
imagine the disciple looking into heaven after jesus’ resurrection. they must have been thinking..
THERE GOES LUNCH
They mourn because the season has change...
and its time for a new thing.
notice jesus’ words
Matthew 9:16 NASB95
16 “But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results.
Matthew F. Celebrate! The King Is Finally Here! (9:14–17)

Jesus indicated that his message of the new covenant was too fresh and vital to be attached to an old garment

Listen if we want new results we have to be wiling to do a new things.
Isaiah 43:19 ESV
19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
notice the chapter before when Isaiah says,
Isaiah 42:10 NASB95
10 Sing to the Lord a new song, Sing His praise from the end of the earth! You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it. You islands, and those who dwell on them.
Why is Isaiah instructing them to sing to the Lord a new song?
because He is doing a new thing.
like the Pharisee, some of us are so busy doing an old thing that we cant behold God doing a new thing.
Listen if we want to be apart of what God will do in these great and last day we have to be willing to look up and do something new
Ephesians 4:20–24 NASB95
20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
Ephesians 4:23 NASB95
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
New year renewed mind...
we have to decide to let the dirt and junk of last year go and embrace all the newness that this year can bring..
LORD RENEW OUR MINDS SO WE CAN BE NEW.
Matthew F. Celebrate! The King Is Finally Here! (9:14–17)

His new wine of the new covenant was too vibrant and potent to be placed in an old wineskin that is rigid and inflexible. The situation demanded a new vessel. Matthew recorded Jesus hinting at his coming announcement (16:18) of a new approach. He will deposit his message into a new wineskin—the church.

The second mini parable is a warning to those who are complacent and stiff
Matthew 9:17 NASB95
17 “Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
When wine ferments, it gives off gasses that stretch the wineskins. The fresh leather can stretch and expand, but older leather has already stretched as much as it can.
In 2021 will you be flexible?
adaptable? willing to change and be stretched
Jesus says, “otherwise the wineskins burst”
Jesus indicated that pharisaical Israel will not be able to handle Jesus’ truth.
Israel was too rigid and unresponsive to carry his message to the world. God would use the church to accomplish that goal
The question become, Will or can he use you?
