The authority of scripture means that all the words in scripture are God’s words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God.

The problem of authority in a culture that is anti-authority:

In a culture that thrives on human freedom, autonomy and creative individuality, divine authority is not usually an appealing idea.
But if God is God, it doesn’t matter what we think about His authority. God has complete and total authority regardless of whether we believe it or not.
Because the Bible is the word of God, it is authoritative not just for the believer but also for the unbeliever. ALL human beings are accountable to God and thereby accountable to His Word.
Romans 1:18-32
The greatest judgment that we can receive from God is for Him to give us up to our own sinful wants and desires. Even this is a display of His divine authority. Many times the worst thing that God could do for us is to give us what we want.
The discipline of God is also another way that we see God exercise His authority over our lives.
Hebrews 12:5–6 ESV
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
Hebrews 12:11 ESV
11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
When we are disciplined by God it shows that we are truly His sons and daughters, and that brings comfort and assurance.
We are ultimately convinced of the claims that the Bible is God’s Word as we read and the Holy Spirit reveals its authority to us.
1 Corinthians 2:13–14 ESV
13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

The Word of God is our ultimate standard of truth.

John 17:17 ESV
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
