soon he will be pouring out His blood for the washing away of sin
6 Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Peter was appalled that Jesus the Messiah was washing feet, and certainly not his feet
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things.” 8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet forever!” Jesus replied to him, “Unless I wash you, you do not have a share with me.”

Before we come into the presence of God we need to be cleansed
9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed only needs to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you.”
Peter again swung completely to the other extreme, because of his love for Jesus

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! 3 For we also were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, enslaved to various desires and pleasures, spending our lives in wickedness and envy, despicable, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love for mankind of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not by deeds of righteousness that we have done, but because of his mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we may become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
we are bathed by the blood of Jesus, and all of our sins are forgiven.
but our feet stink sometimes, and to be able to come into the throne room of the Almighty our feet need to be taken care of
10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed only needs to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 (For he knew the one who would betray him; because of this he said, “Not all of you are clean.”)
Judas was not saved, not a believer

12 So when he had washed their feet and taken his outer clothing and reclined at table again, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you?

what does it mean for Jesus to wash their feet?
To forgive
To serve
To be humble
15 For I have given you an example, that just as I have done for you, you also do. 16 Truly, truly I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you understand these things, you are blessed if you do them.
