Behold I make all things New

Revelation 21:3–7 NASB95
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” 5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” 6 Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. 7 “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
Christ will come back
The second coming of Christ is of supreme interest to all true Christians. Those who are found to be faithful Christians. The second coming was taught by Jesus, Paul, John, and the Hebrew writer as a real event that will happen some time in the future. The Jews looked for the Messiah to come according the scriptures they had at the time. The prophecies, poetry, history, and law were sprinkled with messianic prophecy showing someone would come to save the world from the bondage of sin. That someone was Jesus Christ.
Examples abound
Genesis 3:15 NASB95
15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
Fullfilled in Gal 4 and Rom 16
Galatians 4:4 NASB95
4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,
Romans 16:20 NASB95
20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
Jesus had zeal for His Father’s House
Psalm 69:9 NASB95
9 For zeal for Your house has consumed me, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
Fulfilled in John 2:16-17
John 2:16–17 NASB95
16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”
His Works Were Amazing
Isaiah 35:5 NASB95
5 Then the eyes of the blind will be opened And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.
Isaiah 61:1–3 NASB95
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
And it was fulfilled in
Matthew 11:2-6
Jesus Himself said during His earthly ministry in Luke 19:10 (NASB95)
10 “For athe Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Jesus fulfilled all the Messianic prophecies about Him. And one prophecy He gave in the form of a promise was that He would leave them for a time and then come and take them home
John 14:1–3 NASB95
1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
The first coming of Jesus is a certain and true fact of history and we have the Bible containing the teachings in the New Testament of Jesus Christ. Just as certain as He came a first time, we can be certain that He will come back a second time.
Contrasts
As a minister of the gospel, it is my duty and privilege to share a contrast that we see in scripture regarding the first coming of Jesus and the second coming these writers talked about. Please have your Bibles and apps ready. We will surf through a large amount of scripture. For the note takers, there is one major heading and two columns. The heading is contrast the first and second comings. The columns are First coming and Second coming. And, I would encourage you to write down the scriptural references as not all of them will be on the wall.
The first contrast we see in scripture is that Jesus, first, came in the flesh.
Isaiah 7:14 (NASB95)
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, aa 1virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name 2bImmanuel.
Isaiah 9:6 (NASB95)
Isaiah 9:6 NASB95
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
6 For a achild will be born to us, a bson will be given to us;
And the cgovernment will 1rest don His shoulders;
And His name will be called eWonderful Counselor, fMighty God,
Eternal gFather, Prince of hPeace.
Jesus came in the flesh
Matt 1, John 1:1-3, 14-15
In Matthew 1, Jesus came in the flesh. He was born to Mary and Joseph as a real child. John 1:1-3, 14-15 say that the Word that was with God in the beginning became flesh and made His dwelling among men.
Paul would write to Timothy in refuting the heretical thought that Jesus was not a real person said this in 1 Timothy 3:16 (NASB95)
1 Timothy 3:16 NASB95
16 By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.
For your personal study, I would jot down Hebrews 10:5 as well.
His second coming will be in a new body.
We know for a fact and without a doubt that Jesus came in the flesh. His earthly body was crushed and hung on a tree. Contrast this with what will happen at the second coming of Christ. His second coming will be in a new body.
2 Corinthians 5:16 (NASB95)
16 Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ 1according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer.
Contrast — Christ will come back in a glorious body
Christ is now seated God’s Right Hand. He will not come again in the flesh to repeat the
previous life He lived. When Jesus comes back it will be in a glorious new body.
1 John 3:2 (NASB95)
2 aBeloved, now we are bchildren of God, and cit has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He dappears, we will be elike Him, because we will fsee Him just as He is.
Whether that looks like a human form or exactly as Revelations describes the Lord’s
body it will be glorious, because He is to be glorified.
The second contrast is the way Jesus came and will come. The first time Jesus came was in humility.
Philippians 2:5–11 (NASB95)
Philippians 2:5–11 NASB95
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
5 aHave this attitude 1in yourselves which was also in bChrist Jesus,
6 who, although He aexisted in the bform of God, cdid not regard equality with God a thing to be 1grasped,
7 but 1aemptied Himself, taking the form of a bbond-servant, and cbeing made in the likeness of men.
8 Being found in appearance as a man, aHe humbled Himself by becoming bobedient to the point of death, even cdeath 1on a cross.
9 aFor this reason also, God bhighly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him cthe name which is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus aevery knee will bow, of bthose who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is aLord, to the glory of God the Father.
Isaiah 53 describes the suffering servant as a Lamb led to the slaughter who did not open His mouth or fight back against His oppressors. There’s a whole sermon right there for a later time.
In Hebrews 2:9–11 (NASB95)
Hebrews 2:9–11 NASB95
9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Jesus Briefly Humbled
9 But we do see Him who was amade 1for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, bbecause of the suffering of death ccrowned with glory and honor, so that dby the grace of God He might etaste death ffor everyone.
10 For ait was fitting for Him, bfor whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to cperfect the 1dauthor of their salvation through sufferings.
11 For both He who asanctifies and those who bare 1sanctified are all cfrom one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them dbrethren,
Contrast that humble suffering servant with the second time Jesus will come back.
The second time Jesus comes back it will be in glory—in exultation. When the sheep and the goats are judged in Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus will not be a humble sheep. He will sit on a glorious throne.
Matthew 25:31 (NASB95)
The Judgment
31 “But when athe Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then bHe will sit on His glorious throne.
In Matthew 16:27, The Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father and His angels. The second coming of Jesus will be a resplendent coming. A coming where the whole earth will know Jesus is Lord. Romans 14 says every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
Matthew 16:27 NASB95
27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.
And, when He comes it will not be in a lowly manger to live the lowly life of a carpenter. Read the rest of that verse, “[He] will repay every man according to his deeds. (And, for your personal study, I would write down 2 Tim. 4:1, 6-8)
A third contrast is the reason why Jesus came. Jesus first came down to die for sinners. The message of the gospel is in it’s powerful form found in 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (NASB95)
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NASB95
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
3 For aI delivered to you 1as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died bfor our sins caccording to the Scriptures,
4 and that He was buried, and that He was araised on the third day baccording to the Scriptures,
Paul said only what Christ taught Him to say. He said Jesus Christ died for our sins. He died according to the Old Testament prophecies.
Jesus died according to what He said about Himself having to suffer and die. 1 Timothy 2:5–6 (NASB95) Paul wrote,
5 For there is aone God, and bone mediator also between God and men, the cman Christ Jesus,
6 who agave Himself as a ransom for all, the btestimony 1given at 2cthe proper time.
There was one most important purpose for Jesus to come down in the flesh and that was to die for sinners. Hebrews 2:9 (NASB95)
Hebrews 2:9 NASB95
9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
9 But we do see Him who was amade 1for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, bbecause of the suffering of death ccrowned with glory and honor, so that dby the grace of God He might etaste death ffor everyone.
He suffered for a little while on our behalf.
Contrast that with the second coming of Jesus where Jesus is not coming to die anymore. Romans 6:9–10 (NASB95)
9 knowing that Christ, having been araised from the dead, 1is never to die again; bdeath no longer is master over Him.
10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
In fact, Jesus will not die anymore. When He comes back He will be save those who draw near to Him. He is able to do that because He is alive and always making intercession for the saints. He goes to God on our behalf. This is most fitting according to Hebrews 7:25–26 (NASB95)
Hebrews 7:25–26 NASB95
25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;
25 Therefore He is able also to asave 1forever those who bdraw near to God through Him, since He always lives to cmake intercession for them.
26 For it was fitting for us to have such a ahigh priest, bholy, cinnocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and dexalted above the heavens;
I would like to think we understand how important it is that Jesus does not die anymore. How could we have the blood continually cleanse us if Jesus had to repeat His sacrifice over and over again. When we lift Jesus up and recognize the completion of the Old sacrificial system on our behalf it should move some of us to tears. Because, we know exactly from what sins Jesus saved us.
A fourth reason Jesus came to educate us. Jesus first came to the earth to teach the world. In John 17:8 (NASB95)
8 for athe words which You gave Me bI have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that cI came forth from You, and they believed that dYou sent Me.
John 17:14 (NASB95)
14 “I have given them Your word; and athe world has hated them, because bthey are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
I used to puzzle on this passage because I grew up in the churches of Christ and heard that we need to obey the gospel for years and years. I believe a person outside of Christ needs to obey the gospel. The way to do that is the same way we raise our kids. Our children must learn to respect our words and abide by them. I read an article this week about raising kids and the mom sounded a little strict at first until you read her logic. She said the children could learn to obey the first time she said something or they could be punished for not listening and still be required to accomplish the request. For example, a child is asked to clean their room. They have an option to immediately obey or they could attempt to refuse, be punished, and then still have to obey. Either way, the direction is obedience.
Jesus gave us His Word. We have the option to obey now or look at the contrast with the second coming of Jesus.
Jesus will come a second time not to teach the world, but to judge the world by His Word. John 12:47 (NASB95)
John 12:47 NASB95
47 “If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
47 “If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for aI did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 “aHe who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; bthe word I spoke is what will judge him at cthe last day.
Dear hearts sitting here today, if you love Jesus then love His Word. His Word is the standard by which we will all be judged.
One goal of Christianity is to lift our vision up beyond the tombstone. Physical life is a wonderful gift, but it is only the beginning. It is as though God is saying, “If you think that aspects of this life are awesome, just wait until you see what I have in store for you on the other side.”
Dear heart are you ready to meet your Maker? When Jesus returns it will be in a glorified body. It won’t be in the flesh. When Jesus returns, it it won’t be in humility. Jesus will come in glory to be exalted. When Jesus returns it won’t be to die again for sinners. He is not coming to die any more. When Jesus comes the He will judge the world. While we are here, right now, we have the opportunity to learn from Him through His word. If you are not ready to meet your Maker then please come forward before time passes and apathy sets in the heart. Obey the gospel or confess the sin you are struggling with leaving. Jesus has already come once and as sure as a monsoon rain He will come again. Come now before it is too late. Come now while we stand and sing.
