Text - Matthew 16.13-19

Matthew 16:13–19 NKJV
13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Introduction

How would we answer if we are asked the same question today?
Do we know Jesus?
What do we know of Him?
How do we know Him?
Why did Jesus ask those questions?
Who do men say that I am? (Luke, the crowds)
Matthew 16:13 NKJV
13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
Luke 9:18 NKJV
18 And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”
Who do you say that I am?
Matthew 16:15 NKJV
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
This is the most important, most intimate, question that must be answered.
The first question was just for comparison.

Key Points

“true knowledge of Christ is a revelation from God.”

Matthew 16:17 NKJV
17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
God gives the revelation, not we earning it.
Matthew 11:25–27 NKJV
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. 26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
A revelation has 2 key components:
illumination of the mind
experience or supernatural encounter
Examples:
when God revealed Himself to Moses, Moses knew the name of God and experienced the holiness of God
“I am who I am”
“take off your sandals, this is holy ground”
when Jesus revealed Himself to Saul
“I am Jesus whom you are persecuting”
he was blinded by the light
when Christ revealed Himself to the apostles
the apostles knew Him by revelation from the Father
the apostles knew Him by their experiences with Him
John 14:9–11 NKJV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

“Our knowledge of Christ is the foundation of our relationship with Him.”

All relationships begin with knowledge of the other person.
Adam had to know to his mate
Genesis 2:23 NKJV
23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”
God introduced Himself first to Moses
Exodus 3:5–6 NKJV
5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” 6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
God revealed Himself to His people
Exodus 20:1–2 NKJV
1 And God spoke all these words, saying: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Israel’s relationship with God was broken many times because of the ignorance of that particular generation
Judges 2:10 NKJV
10 When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.
Jeremiah 4:22 NKJV
22 “For My people are foolish, They have not known Me. They are silly children, And they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, But to do good they have no knowledge.”
The promised New Covenant ensures knowledge of God
Jeremiah 31:31–34 NKJV
31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
thay shall all know Me!
The Church’s relationship with Christ is founded on “this rock”.
Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
the rock of “revelation”
Revelation
something you receive from God, not from ‘flesh and blood’, the crowd
always “personal”

“Our knowledge of Christ is the basis of our actions as Christ.”

Ignorance of God has corresponding actions
Pharaoh: “I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go.”
Exodus 5:2 NKJV
2 And Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, nor will I let Israel go.”
the sons of Eli were corrupt
1 Samuel 2:12 NKJV
12 Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord.
Israel were foolish
Jeremiah 4:22 NKJV
22 “For My people are foolish, They have not known Me. They are silly children, And they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, But to do good they have no knowledge.”
Knowledge of God reflects should reflect in our actions
Galatians 4:8–9 NKJV
8 But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods. 9 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?
1 John 2:3–4 NKJV
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Your knowledge of Christ will direct your actions and behaviors everyday.

“Our knowledge of Christ is the power behind our witnessing for the kingdom of God.”

We cannot proclaim with authority what we do know intimately
Acts 19:13–16 NKJV
13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
The apostles knew who they were preaching about
The apostles were an eyewitnesses
2 Peter 1:16–18 NKJV
16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
Paul’s testimony
1 Corinthians 1:23 NKJV
23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,
2 Corinthians 4:5 NKJV
5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake.

Conclusion

How do we know Christ by revelation?
Your initial knowledge of Christ is freely given
This initial knowledge should result in a desire to know Him more
Paul’s desire to “know Christ more” caused him to give up things in life.
Philippians 3:8–11 NKJV
8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
