Proverbs 13 Sermon D (20-25) - To become wise from earth to heaven - Guide 1: Listening (Reaction to Rebuke/Correction) 2-6: Power and Fury of Words (Desire/Appetite/Soul, Diligence) 7-11: Becoming Rich through diligence/patience/humility/learning, wealth and poverty threaten learning 12-19: Fulfillment of Desire/futility, Revering the Word, Learning, gaining practical wisdom/knowledge. 20-25: To become wise from earth to heaven. 20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. 21 Disaster pursues sinners, but the righteous are rewarded with good. 22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous. 23 The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food, but it is swept away through injustice. 24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. 25 The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want. 20: Advice for the young and old - Fellowship of the Saints. "Fools" is the link between companion and harm. Who is wise? Who is a fool? Ruth 1:16 16 But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 2 Kings 2:4 4 Elijah said to him, "Elisha, please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. 21-22: Chiastically linked. 21: An inevitable, eventual consequence. The hunter becomes the hunted. "Not the smallest good-even 'a cup of cold water to a disciple' (Matt. 10:42), or honour shewn to his servants (Matt. 10:41; 1 Kings 17:16-23)-shall 'lose its reward' (Heb. 6:10)." Matthew 10:41 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward." Hebrews 6:10 10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. 22: Wicked lose it, righteous gain it - Canaanites and Israelites. Irony: Assumption: 23: Nuances V18 & 21: Assumption: God made the earth in such a way that there can be plenty of food for everyone. 24: Nuances V22: Assumption: John turning the hearts of the fathers back to their sons. 25: Return to the point of the previous sub-unit (13-19) - Desire. Matt 16:24-26 - 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? Bob Dylan: Gotta serve somebody. You may be an ambassador to England or France You may like to gamble, you might like to dance You may be the heavyweight champion of the world You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody Luke 16:24 - And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.'
