Introduction

Hebrews 4:9–11 ESV
9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

The Proclamation

Hebrews 4:9 ESV
9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,
“So then...”
stating conclusion of his logical argument.
see Heb 3:7 - Heb 4:8
About to make a doctrinal proclamation
for scriptural support … see previous text!
So what is the proclamation...
“…there remains a Sabbath rest...”
What is this Sabbath rest?
Heb 4:4 - Creation Week
Think destination not day of the week.
This Sabbath rest has not yet come.
We are looking forward to it!
“…for the people of God,”
The Proclamation has a Qualification
This offer of rest is exclusive!!!
Only for “The people of God.”
Who are the people of God.
Those in Christ Jesus,
Whole bible is about Jesus
Looking forward in faith
Looking back in faith
Everything God has done is about what He is doing in Christ Jesus.

An Explanation

Hebrews 4:10 ESV
10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
We have work to do.
This rest comes AFTER our work is through.
We can have peace and joy in this life
God’s Sabbath Rest comes after this life.
it is a rest in perfect existence with God
Gen 1:31 -6th day - It was very good
Gen 2:1-2 7th day God rested

Three Circles

The Exhortation

Hebrews 4:11 ESV
11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
Let us, therefore, strive to enter
Strive - intense desire
Run the race
You ever watch video of people who celebrate too early and lose the race.
Why do we strive to finish?
So that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:13 ESV
13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
