Last week we took a glance at our 3 part focus for this year. We draw off of a long and rich history as church, and looking forward, we want to make sure that our focus, our purpose, everything that we do out of this building is what God would have for our church. Because this isn’t a country club. This isn’t a get rich quick class. This isn’t even a self help program. This is a church. Our focus, is on God.
And so we look to scripture, and I found that there are three things, that we are called to, as a church and as individuals. Three things that have the potential to totally change your life. Three things that - if we accomplish them - will change the world. Glorify God. Equip Saints. Share the Gospel.
So today we are going to really dig into that first focus. Glorifying God. What it means, why we do it, and finally how.
Lets pray together.

What does Glorify mean?

As we all know, the New Testament was not written in English, but in Greek.

Greek expression: doxazō

Pronunciation: dawkss AH dzoh

Means to make glorious. To give glory.
Glory itself means to carry weight. to have importance.
I would describe it as having the appropriate amount of attention, adoration, and thanks.
To glorify something, is often to worship or to give praise to that thing.
As we go through life - we glorify a lot of things.
We give things weight, we give things importance. We give things praise.
When things, or people, show us their value, they prove themselves to us, we often put them on a pedastool.
You want to see what I am talking about?
Ask a ford guy, what he thinks about a chevy. Or a Jeep guy about that new bronco that just came out.
Ask a KJV only person or even an ESV Bible person about reading the NIV.
Ask a greenbay packers fan about the cowboys. Or a cowboys fan about any other team. You know the cowboys haven’t been good since like 1995 - but their fans are faithful.
My team is better than yours. Let me tell you why. Its about championships.
Or, my bible is the only one you can read - cause it says authorized right there on the cover.
What does it mean to glorify something? To put it above other things. To place value and importance on that thing.
When you glorify something, you are thinking about it, you talk about it, you brag about it.

Why do we Glorify God?

1. Because we have seen his great works.
This is something that we are going to be learning how to do this year - to recognize the workings of God in our lives… We have to see it. We have to recognize it. And give him thanks for it.
As believers, at one point or another - we have seen it. In the world around us, in other people, but we also see Gods incredible work in ourselves.
Think about this. You are the only one walking this earth that knows the real you. I mean the real you. The thoughts in your head. The malice in your heart. The rage, the lust, the deceit. You are the only one that truly knows what God has bought you out of. What he purchased you from. I know I am not the only sinner in this room.
We Glorify God, because he deserves it.
Psalm 86:8–13 CSB
Lord, there is no one like you among the gods, and there are no works like yours. All the nations you have made will come and bow down before you, Lord, and will honor your name. For you are great and perform wonders; you alone are God. Teach me your way, Lord, and I will live by your truth. Give me an undivided mind to fear your name. I will praise you with all my heart, Lord my God, and will honor your name forever. For your faithful love for me is great, and you rescue my life from the depths of Sheol.
2. Our glorification is obedience.
We do it because he told us to. It is what we were created to do. In the Old testament book of Isaiah, we hear God speaking through the prophet Isaiah, and He said
Isaiah 43:7 ESV
everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
Now, we are jumping into the middle of a thought, where God is really dealing with the nation of Israel, and this isn’t the bulk of what he is saying - this isn’t the point of this passage of scripture, but there in the middle, we see this explanation from the Father. He says - Whom I created for my glory. That gives cause for the entirety of the first two chapters of creation. God did all of those things, in 7 days, resting on the seventh, FOR HIS GLORY.
1 Corinthians 6:20 CSB
for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.
The reality is, all of creation exists for this one purpose, to give God Glory.
David says in
Psalm 19:1 CSB
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands.
It isn’t just the living things that pay tribute, its all of it. The heavens declare the glory of God. We Glorify God because that is what we were created to do. We glorify God because he tells us to.
3. Our glorification has the potential to impact the world around us.
1 Peter 2:12 CSB
Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that when they slander you as evildoers, they will observe your good works and will glorify God on the day he visits.
We have faith in him. We give God glory by having faith in him.
God’s word is full of promises. Promises for hope, and eternity. Promises for comfort and joy. Promises for provision. And Jesus says yes to all of those. We glorify God by putting our trust first in Him.
There are two ways you can pay for lunch today. You can buy lunch because you went out, got a job, and exchanged your time for money and that money is backed by the united states government and then trade that money for a sandwich.
OR. You can go out and buy lunch today because God has blessed you with provision. Skills, a job,
2. We give God glory with the way that we live.
The bible is full of instructions on how we aught to be living. With love, sharing grace. This is different from the world. This is different even from what I see from a lot of people who call themselves christians. We got so wrapped up in the world, its hard to tell us apart.
We take time to pray. We take time to worship. We take time to love others.
Ii was listening to an evangelist the other day who reminded me that people are not an inconvenience. As the rest of the world is so busy running through their day, we have to be the ones taking time to love people. We have to. And I know, I get busy too.
We live holy, set apart, weird lives.
3. We do it with intention.
We have to understand, this is our purpose. And handle ourselves accordingly. This means being willing to correct ourselves, being willing to adjust our thoughts, our behavior.. not to align with the world or the news.. but to the word and the will of God. We have to be willing to set our stuff aside.
We do it without seeking recognition.
Psalm 115:1 CSB
Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory because of your faithful love, because of your truth.
Paul Washer said it like this: How is God glorified by a rose that He plants in a forest so remote that no man or angel will ever see it? He is glorified because He sees it. How is God glorified by those servants who are hidden from all notoriety and fame? Because he sees them, knows their way, and rejoices.
Everything about our service this morning is done with the intention of changing our focus. The whole world is wrapped up in the election, the virus, the protests… but this year God is calling us to put our focus back on Him. To give him glory. To give him Honor.
Our focus this year is going to start there. Everything we do as a church will flow out of this.
