Behold the Son in 2021!
We will start a sermon series on the miracles of Jesus.
We can behold Jesus by allowing Him to work a miracle in your life.
I believe that as God’s people, we can ask for a miracle from His Son Jesus.
True healing comes from God.
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”
In the gospels, the miracles of Jesus were done to serve the following purposes:
Purposes of Jesus’ Miracles:
To meet a need. (The obvious reason)
To prove Jesus is from God.
So people will believe in Jesus.
Background
5 roofed walkways where the sick lay, John mentioned the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed.
For some reason, Jesus fixed His attention on this one man who was an invalid for 38 years.
He knew that he has already been there for a long time. How Jesus knew? someone may have told him or I believe that Jesus had supernatural knowledge of the man’s condition.
In any case, Jesus saw the man’s situation and his need.
Jesus Performs Healing to Meet a Need.
FOr those of you needing healing at this time.
Rest assured that Jesus:
Jesus sees your condition and your need for healing.
Jesus performs miracles to meet the need. He feels your pain, He goes through the malady of suffering.
This is what Jesus is like – compassionate. The Lord Jesus manifests His compassionate nature whenever He heals. Consider the following scriptures where the Lord healed from a heart of compassion:
14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
34 And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.
41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”
For those of you in need of healing today, it is already reassuring that Jesus has compassion on you.
Jesus asked the sick man in verse 6:
“Do you want to be healed?”
Notice that Jesus did not require faith from this man but rather his agreement.
Some of healings that Jesus were done with the demonstration of the faith of the ones He healed.. examples.. the centurion’s servant in Luke 7, the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5.
But many of Jesus’ healing miracles were done out of His desire to heal, for this sick man, he required His agreement or consent.
Why would Jesus ask..
Maybe he wanted to stay in his misery.. wallowing in his misfortune, to ..
Jesus wanted to see the man’s heart if He is ready to receive real healing from God.
2. Healing Miracles Prove Jesus is God.
The man replied to Jesus:
7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
Some manuscripts include text that say that at times an angel of the Lord went down and stirred the water and whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of any disease he had.
We don’t fully understand how this happens, but this man may have been waiting and trying for all of 38 years..
That was his own way, his only way in his mind for him to be healed of his infirmity.
But Jesus is here to prove that He is still the best way to be healed. True healing comes from Him.
People take medication for physical conditions and they work. Tylenol or ibuprofen for headaches, remember that ultimately, God is the source of healing.
Where did the raw materials for these medicines come from?
Who gave the knowledge that was discovered by modern medicine?
Natural healing or cures are also from God.
True healing comes from God
Nothing beats a supernatural healing from Jesus.
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”
Hallelujah!
Notice:
In the demonstration of His power, Jesus commands us to do what we can’t and to become what we are not.
9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
This is the creative power of God! Do not write yourself off! Don’t lose hope. Don’t be discouraged by the test result.
If He can create something out of nothing.. he can recreate a brand new you, he can recreate the cells in your body..
He can do a heart surgery in you so that your former heart that was unbelieving and even rebellious toward God will become one that is a heart of faith and surrender to Him.
3) Jesus Heals so People will Believe in Him.
10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”
The significance of John’s mention of the Sabbath is this..
By healing on the Sabbath Jesus claims that He has authority over rules and regulation that govern the Sabbath day and over the old Jewish religious system for that matter.
Jesus came to fulfill the law.
28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
That healing on the Sabbath set off a course of events and opposition from the religious leaders. eventually led to His death..
Jesus pointed the world to Himself.
25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me,
The ultimate purpose of a miracle is that people will believe that Jesus is the Son of God and by believing they may have life in His Name.
Jesus does not stop at healing the body. He wants to heal your soul.
Some say that there is a spiritual symbolism in the story of the man who was sick… the 38 years that he was an invalid represented the 38 years that Israel needlessly wandered in the wilderness. The five roofed colonnades represented the Torah the five books of Moses or the law and the commandments.
You don’t have to wander in your own spiritual journey. Jesus is the way the truth and the life.
You no longer rely on keeping the law and the commandments...
prayer.
