Paul’s Call
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,” (Romans 1:1, ESV)
Servant of Jesus
doulos “87.76 δοῦλος, ου m: one who is a slave in the sense of becoming the property of an owner (though in ancient times it was frequently possible for a slave to earn his freedom)—‘slave, bondservant...When Paul speaks of himself as a slave of Jesus Christ or of God in Ro 1:1, Ga 1:10, and Tt 1:1, the term δοῦλος focuses attention primarily upon his belonging to Christ or to God.” (Louw-Nida)
Called to be an apostle
Apostle - “53.74 ἀπόστολοςa, ου m: one who fulfills the role of being a special messenger (generally restricted to the immediate followers of Jesus Christ, but also extended, as in the case of Paul, to other early Christians active in proclaiming the message of the gospel)—‘apostle, special messenger.’” (Louw-Nida)
14 And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ 15 And I said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16 But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, 17 delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you 18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

set apart for the gospel of God
Set apart “to set aside a person for a particular task or function—‘to appoint, to set apart for.’ (Louw-Nida)

Gospel
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Not Ashamed
“to experience or feel shame or disgrace because of some particular event or activity—‘to be ashamed of.” (Louw, Nida)
Paul is saying that the events of Jesus’s life, death and resurrection and the proclamation of the m do not cause him shame. He finds it to be a great joy and privilege.
Gospel
“God’s good news to humans, good news as proclamation” (BDAG)
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,

The Gospel is the good news that God has provided forgiveness for our sins as a free gift through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ to be received by faith.
Power of God For Salvation
Power of God For Salvation
The Power (16b)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
“The English word Dynamite comes from this Greek word.” (JM)
Gunpowder was not invented until 9th century and dynamite was not invented until 1869.
This is not what Luke or Paul had in mind when they wrote the word “dynamis”. Sometimes what we read in commentaries or devotionals can put a certain idea on the text that is foreign to the text.
Power “‘capability’, with emphasis on function. ① potential for functioning in some way, power, might, strength, force, capability” (BDAG)
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”” (Acts 1:8, ESV)
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16, ESV)
These 2 verses use this word in the same sense. There is the power, ability and capability to accomplish a task or function. Acts, ability to be a witness. Romans, God’s ability to Save.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16, NET)
I wonder if when we see/read power, we think of force. The gospel is God’s means of forcing people to be saved.
The proclamation of the gospel is that God has the power to save.
For Salvation (16c)
Salvation “to rescue from danger and to restore to a former state of safety and well being—‘to deliver, to rescue, to make safe, deliverance.’” (Louw, Nida)
Salvation is a term that is am umbrella or broad term encompassing other terms used to understand salvation. (Justification, Sanctification, regeneration, reconciliation, redemption, glorification)
God has the power to accomplish all parts of salvation. He has the power to forgive us, the power to sanctify us, the power to reconcile us, the power to regenerate us, and the power to glorify us.
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6, ESV)
For everyone who believes
For everyone who believes
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Everyone - “the totality of any object, mass, collective, or extension—‘all, every, each, whole.’” (Louw, Nida)
Believes - “to believe in the good news about Jesus Christ and to become a follower—‘to be a believer, to be a Christian, Christian faith.’” (Louw, Nida)
God has the power and the will to save people and the means of that is faith/belief.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, ESV)
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
“For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”” (Romans 10:13, ESV)
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”” (Matthew 11:28–30, ESV)
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9, ESV)
