Matthew 9:35-38 -
v. 35 - what Jesus did - teaching, proclaiming, healing
What’s the difference between teaching and proclaiming?
Does anyone today have the gift of healing like Jesus and His Apostles had it?
How do we decide when to teach, preach, or ask God for healing?
What’s sorts of diseases and sicknesses can Jesus heal?
v. 36 - what Jesus felt - compassion
What is compassion?
What’s the connection between Jesus “seeing the people” and His feeling compassion for them?
What do we need to do to see people as Jesus did?
How would you describe being distressed?
How would you describe being dispirited?
What has caused their distressed and dispirited condition?
v. 37 - what Jesus saw - opportunity
Here are people distressed and dispirited because they are without the Shepherd.
Here Jesus is, the Good Shepherd, who can lead them through their distress and discouragement.
But distressed and dispirited people are everywhere, and Jesus at least at the moment, couldn’t be everywhere at once.
So, more workers were needed.
v. 38 - what Jesus commanded - prayer
Why doesn’t Jesus tell His disciples to recruit or hire workers for the harvest?
Because they aren’t sovereign over the harvest. God is.
God is the One we must beseech.
God is the Lord of the harvest.
God is the One who sends out workers.
The harvest is His harvest.
Why does Jesus tell His disciples to pray when He knows He will send them out into the harvest just a bit later?
Matthew 15:1-15 -
v. 1 - what Jesus gave - authority
What is significant about the authority mentioned in v. 1?
Delegated authority - Given by Jesus to His disciples.
Specific authority - to cast out unclean spirits, to heal every kind of disease (e.g., Jesus didn’t give them authority over storms)
vv. 2-4 - who Jesus sent - the twelve
vv. 5- what Jesus instructed -
(vv. 5-6) the priority
Why not the Gentiles or Samaritans?
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
How did Jesus respond to Gentiles and Samaritans who genuinely trusted Him?
(vv. 7-8) the practice
What’s significant about the message, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand”?
What’s the motivation for this ministry in the sentence “Freely you received, freely give”? (Grace) What would another motivation be? (Greed)
(vv. 9-10) the provision
How would the disciples be supported during this endeavor?
(vv. 11-15) the presence & (if necessary) the parting
How does v. 11 address partiality?
What might make a house unworthy (vv. 12-13)?
What does shaking the dust off your feet signify (v. 14)?
Why are the consequences so severe for rejecting these disciples?
Mark 6:12-32 - the harvesting & the hearing
{the harvesting}
Why repentance (v. 12)?
Why oil (v. 13)?
{the hearing}
Why did Jesus’ Name become more well known (v. 14)?
How did Jesus explain the power Jesus had (vv. 14-15)?
Do you think Herod was freaking out a bit (v. 16)?
What’s the connection between ‘repent’ (v. 12) and John the Baptist’s interaction with Herod (v. 17ff)?
Why do you think the righteousness and holiness of John the Baptist scarred Herod (v. 20)?
{the healing} after the disciples had healed others, they needed to heal (i.e., recover) through rest
What are a few important things the disciples did here as they rested after ministry?
Gathered to Jesus.
Reported to Him. <prayer>
Nourished themselves. <trying to find time to eat>
Secluded themselves.
