Do you got SOUL???

Mark 8:34–38 NASB95

34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37 “For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

When Jesus is speaking of  losing the soul here He is not just referring to Eschatology or Eschatological Judgment but a waning to lot lose the soul. 

So this rise two very important questions.

What is the Soul?

Can you lose your soul and still be alive?

Wester defines the Soul as 

1: the immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life

2a : the spiritual principle embodied in human beings, all rational and spiritual beings, or the universe

b capitalized Christian Science : god 1b

3: a person’s total self

4a : an active or essential part

b : a moving spirit : leader

5a : the moral and emotional nature of human beings

b : the quality that arouses emotion and sentiment1

Strong’s defines it as life, soul, heart, mind, a person the immaterial and (eternal) part of the inner ward man. 

Our souls are eternal. It I the nonmaterial inward part of a man.It is the part of man that cant been with ones eye.

The souls seat one emotion and desires. One thought and reasoning. And house ours all of the senses.

The soul is the place of reasoning.. where we collect information. 

The place where we process though. It is from there that we communicate with man and with God. 

Stephan Charnock says that “the soul the greatest glory of this lower world.”

Charles Sturgeon says 

“Consider how precious a soul must be, when both God and the devil are after it. You never heard that the devil was after a kingdom, did you? No, he is not so foolish; he knows it would not be worth his winning; he is never after that; but he is always after souls. You never heard that God was seeking after a crown, did you! No, he thinketh little of dominions; but he is after souls every day; his Holy Spirit is seeking his children; and Christ came to save souls. Do you think that which hell craves for, and that which God seeks for, is not precious?” Charles Spurgeon

what profits a man to gain the world and lose  his Soul 

now notice the context 

first Jesus ask them who do they say that I am? 

Then Jesus tell of his future destiny. 

Peter who gets it right the 1st time get it wrong this one 

He rebukes the Lord and them Jesus turns and says to him

“Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” 

Jesus points to 2 interest here

Then he says if you wanna follow God’s heart you must lay down man’s or you own interest

And the only way to do this is by not losing your soul. 

Soul heart and reasoning 

2 Corinthians 4:16 NASB95

16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.

Don’t lose heart..

Don’t grow weary

Don’t run out of courage 

See the lord knew what peter would need to follow him 

We would be in need of great courage. 

But profits a man if he gain the world and is bankrupt on the inside 

No passion no boldness no courage. 

Do you got soul. 

Will you be able to stand

Will you fight

You you have what it take to stand and fight the battle 

The devil want to strip you of all you courage.

We come to totally wear down the saints 

There has to be something on the inside of you that says yes lord I will carry this cross. 

You will be in need of courage to stand in front of people and preach the gospel without being ashamed. 

To be like paul when he says 

I am not ashamed of the gospel of jesus for it is the power of God into salvation. 

When I think about soul 

I think about Brotha James Brown the hardest workingman in show business…

James would sing and dance with all his heart. 

You couldn’t understand a word that he was saying. But you could feel that he was saying something that was coming from the inside. 

Soul music is defined as music that come from the heart.
