Explanation

Matthew 25:14–30 NLT
“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip. “The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money. “After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more.’ “The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ “The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two more.’ “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ “Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’ “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’ “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Context: Jesus is teaching the masses....at this point in Matthew he is teaching predominately in parables. These are stories that are meant to convey a message of importance. Jesus was speaking to this group about the reality of preparing themselves for his return....But in each parable we see truths about how Jesus wants us to live as well as prepare for his return.
Entrusted
Greek -Paradidomi
The master put into their control a percentage of his estate. These 3 servants were given a piece of his kingdom.
-to entrust someone with something is to give them control over what happens with it....definitely a risk involved for the one who is entrusting
-As Jesus was speaking to the crowds they would have been familiar with the work of a servant. It was conceivable that some of them at one point or were currently a servant to someone when they were hearing this parable told.
-when the master entrusted this piece of the kingdom to the servants he was well aware that they had other responsibilities.
-however when the master returned he was not interested in the other work they had accomplished, but he wanted to know what had been done with the piece of the Kingdom that they were entrusted with when he left.
-verse 16 when it said that the servant began to INVEST the money.....the Hebrew counterpart for this word is the same word that was used in
Genesis 2:5 NLT
neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil.
Cultivate- to work, prepare the ground
-the 2 servants cultivated that which was entrusted to them by the master and in their working there was an increase
-the one servant decided not to cultivate what was given to him and in the end his hesitancy, his delay in acting this is the concept behind this word.....it lead him to do nothing with what the master had entrusted to him.
The next place we see this word paradidomi used was in John 19:30
John 19:28–30 NLT
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Jesus was in the middle of the single most excruciating times in his life......he was hanging on the cross as an innocent man who had taken our sins upon himself
-Jesus’ conversation with his father in the garden is ringing true as Jesus hangs here
Luke 22:42 NLT
“Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
-In John 19:28 Jesus saw that what he had come to accomplish was done......so he trusted the father one last time.
-This final act of trust was the last one when he gave his Spirit to the Father......He entrusted himself fully to the father and was dead.
-Think about the use of this word here......Jesus entrusted himself to the Father. What was there to trust? Jesus released all the results of what he had done, because he knew that he had been faithful to what the Father had asked him to do.
-In his humanity the cross was an exposing place, not only physically, but I believe the enemy continued to attack him on the cross....some in form of the people surrounding him jeering....save yourself! If you are the Son of God call down the angels.
-Jesus listened to the Father at every turn and it was in his final act of giving/entrusting/ committing his spirit to him was when the greatest act of trust happened.
2 Timothy 1:13–14 NLT
Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.
Paul was encouraging Timothy in this last letter to him to continue to hold onto the example of his teach which is shaped
-the word shaped is actually in the greek from the roots of shaping metal
-This shaping that happens in the Lord is the same as a black smith banging out the design of a cherub
-There is a period of rough shaping where by the end your metal is in the general shape you want it to be
-then there is a stage of refining details, different punches are used to shape
So Paul was telling Timothy to never stop going to this example of teaching that is only shaped in the presence of God. Constantly going back and listening so you can shape your life in the way that communicates the truth of the gospel.
And lastly Paul was telling Timothy with the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us to guard
-again the concept here for guard is to keep watch.
Paul was telling Timothy that along with being shaped by God that you have to know that other things are going to come along and they are going to try to shape the way you think as well.
-We have to watch what comes into our lives and test these things to know if they are from the Lord.
-From after Jesus’s death there were people who were trying to change the truth.
-Well meaning teachers were teaching new converts to the faith that they had to be circumcised in along with the other Jewish laws to follow Jesus.
-False teachers and prophets were popping up shortly after Jesus ascended and Paul was telling Timothy that even though he spent time in the Lord and that shaped everything he taught and did in life that HE STILL NEEDED TO BE ON WATCH FOR THE THINGS THAT WOULD TRY TO SHAPE HIM INTO THEIR IMAGE INSTEAD OF THE IMAGE OF GOD.
Application
cultivate - like in the parable of the servants the master committed those resources to each servant in the expectation they would be good stewards of those resources.
Develop Theology- continuing to work the ground of your heart and mind.....take time to know what you believe of God and why.
Test your theology against scripture itself/ Doctrine
Find a way to share what you learned....tell a friend, ask others what they think about X,Y,Z
consecrate - Just like Jesus in the garden he had to once again say not your will but your will be done which lead to the cross and giving his spirit to the father on the cross
Find ways that we can die to self daily
Galatians 2:20 NLT
My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Ephesians 4:22–24 NLT
throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
as we say Jesus today I want your will to happen in my life. Show me step by step how to live in step with you. As we consume scripture Jesus will speak to our minds as we meditate on his words....chew on them as a cow chews the cud.
b. Jesus lived a life of sacrifice daily dying in little ways …doing only what he hears the father do and say
John 5:19 NLT
So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
this allowed him to live a life of walking with the Father in obedience
3. cover - How can we protect like Paul’s urging to protect that which was entrusted to us? Keep watch for anything that does not look, sound, or feel like Jesus’. Which means we have to get a right understanding of who Jesus is first....which would take us back to number 1. Develop your theology.
Don’t take anything anyone says to heart until you have tested it against scripture and have talked with Jesus in prayer.
in recent days there are people who have very strong feelings about what has happened on both side of the attack on the capitol.
I have seen comments from people in the church telling other leaders in the church they are filled with Satan because they think differently from them on what went down Wednesday
Dont let anyone shape your thinking except Jesus
Then you have to fight in your thought life to keep all other things obedient, subservient to Jesus and what he is saying.
Even test old thoughts and old habits…do they still fit into your life as you have matured in your faith? Is it time to get rid of those habits or practices?
Beware of what you allow to take get a foot hold in your life
1 Peter 5:8 NLT
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
