The New Manners and Customs of the Bible 6:9 Doorposts Inscriptions

The Jews were commanded to write the divine words on the posts (mezuzoth or mezuwzah) of their doors, but they eventually adopted the custom of writing Exodus 13:1–10, 11–16; Deuteronomy 6:4–9; 11:13–21 on parchment and putting them in a reed or cylinder that they then fixed to the right-hand doorpost of every room in the house.

This was a community practice.. they all had these displayed. The community taught this tradition to the next generation.
