Welcome to Wednesdays with Warren. Today is another one of those overlooked Christian holidays. Today, Christians celebrate Epiphany. Epiphany comes from the Greek word for “appearance.” In Western Christianity, Epiphany celebrates Christ’s appearance to the world as the Magi come to see the child Jesus in Matthew 2. Epiphany is celebrated on January 6, which is 12 days after Christmas, hence a connection to the “Twelve Days of Christmas.”
In much of Eastern Christianity, Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Jesus and recognizes His appearance to the world as the Son of God (Mark 1.9-11).
So, happy Epiphany. Listen to a portion of the story from Matthew 2.
Matthew 2:1–2 ESV
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2:11 ESV
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
On this holy day, we celebrate that King Jesus has appeared all people. The Magi represent those who are far away from God. They were not Jewish, but they traveled to find the King and worship and honored Jesus as King with gifts. I want to encourage you to find your way to Jesus and bring Him the best gift you can.
This week is week one of our Core 52 study on Creation. God has created this great world for us. Our action step this week is: Find one small way to help restore Eden where you live. In our small group last night, we talked about the people in our lives. God created people so we want to make time for those in our families. We want to invest in those relationships that are important to us. What’s that look for you?
This Sunday, we’ll begin week two and look at our True Identity from Genesis 1.26. We also, have a special gift to share with you this Sunday either in person on online. So, join us at 8:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. in person or 10 a.m. online.
Let’s pray.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Thank you for appearing to the world. Help us to walk with you each day. Lord, we pray for our country and our leaders. We pray for peace and wisdom. Help them to lead well. We pray for our mission partners around the world. I remember our friends in the Philippines at the Mathetes Youth Center. Please provide for their needs to disciple the youth in Digos City and around the world. We love you, Lord. Amen.
