I love having a routine. There is a sense of knowing that, if I do this on a regular basis, this is what is going to keep me going. I have a morning routine that I enjoy and gives me a strong start to my day.
I wake up at 5:00 am. I have this daylight lamp that sits across from my bed. I set it across from the bed so that when it goes off, I have to get up out of bed and walk over to it to turn it off. I walk out to the living room to get some hot water started for tea. Yes, I like tea rather than coffee. Former coffee drinker, now a tea drinker.
I get my cup of tea and sit down with my journal. I like to spend time getting thoughts out of my head, to clear my head and process my thoughts. Then I open up my Bible, and begin my Bible reading plan. I empty out any thoughts that I was thinking through my journal, and then fill my mind with God’s word. Then I end in prayer, meditating on who God is, and seeking to hear from God. This is my power time with God. I need God’s strength to get me through the day.
This week we are in week 2 of our Bible reading plan. Today, we are reading Luke 6. As I read today’s chapter, Luke 6:12 stood out to me. It says,
Luke 6:12 CSB
12 During those days he went out to the mountain to pray and spent all night in prayer to God.
Luke says, “during those days.” What days is Luke talking about? We read right before this that Jesus is facing oppression. The religious elite are accusing Him of breaking the Sabbath. This is a time of people coming against Him. They are challenging Him, and trying to decide what to do with Him.
Jesus moved with intention. It says, “During those days he went out.” I love the resolute intention of Jesus. He focused on the mission. He was intentonal.
What was Jesus intentional about? Jesus was at a critical time in His ministry. Jesus was about to name the apostles who would be a part of the foundation of the coming church. The Bible says,
Ephesians 2:20 CSB
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.
This was an important time of decision. Look at how Jesus dealt with decision.
He moved with intention towards prayer to God.
He moved towards a place of private prayer.
This was something of such importance to Christ, that He needed an intentional separate and alone time with the Father.
I love that Jesus goes off to a mountain to pray. You can’t help but think of Moses as he went out to Mount Sinai for a time of special connection with God. Or of the prophet Elijah, who goes out to hear from God at Mount Horeb, and hears Him in a still, small voice. Jesus goes off to a private place to bring this decision to the Father.
In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches how to pray. He says to go off into a private room, a private place to be still, pray and hear from God.
Matthew 6:6 CSB
6 But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Jesus was moving with intention to hear from God, and He wanted a private place with no distractions. He goes off to the mountain to pray.
How long does He pray? The Bible says Jesus spent all night in prayer to God. The word here is a medical term referring to a whole night vigil. Jesus was at a decisive time in His ministry. Jesus spent intentional time with the Father, and He took as long as it takes. This was of great importance.
It is a high calling to be able to bring our requests to God. The Bible says that because of Jesus, we can approach God with the important decisions in our life. As you are going through Seek Week, is there something important on your mind and heart? Is there an important decision you need to make?
Take all the time you need before God. Find a quite place, a place where you can get away from distractions. Seek Week is a great time to get away from distractions, get away from the noise, and go to your quiet place with God. Present your requests to God. The Lord Jesus Christ spent dedicated time in prayer, as long as it took. Dedicate your decisions before the Lord today, this week, and this year.
