Christ our Advocate 1Jn 2:1-2
We are commanded not to sin, just as much as a commandment as the Ten in the Old Testament. It's not an option or a suggestion but a commandment. Sin not. What is sin?
An exact definition according to ISBE is - The transgression of the law of God. A closer definition is found in our "Articles of Faith and Bylaws" "Sin is the willful transgression of a known law of God."
"He that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is SIN"
The great Apostle John doesn't stop there, he knows the nature of man, he understands that we are but dust, he sees that humanity is weak, that we are not eternally secure until we are secure in eternity. He continues,
If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiaion for our sins.....
We studied a couple of Wed. nights ago about propitiation, it is used in heathen rights as a gift given to a god to appease their anger. So Christ was crucified to satisfy the justice and anger of God the Father.
It calls him an advocate - perhaps you remember the story my Mother read during our last revival, of H. C. Morrison in the court case. He is our Lawyer our representative, our as Job calls him our daysmen.
Job 9:32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
Job 9:33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
The word daysman in English means ” “an umpire or arbiter, a mediator.” Webster.
But arbitrator is the proper meaning of the term here: one who is, by the consent of both parties, to judge between them, and settle their differences. "Clarke
The picture is of God the Father standing over there (Gesture) and I'm standing here, and Christ in between. Christ places one hand on my shoulder and the other on The Father,
In my experience it would have been the Father told Christ, "Tell Curtis to go make his restitutions." so Christ would lean over and tell me, Then it was up to me, etc
Obedience,
Scripture
When I obeyed He came and did the work. WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE PRAISE THE LORD.
