What’s Hiding In The Heart Ps 66:18
Intro - We are not only taught but commanded to forsake sin; Isa 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: Not only sin but even the thoughts of sin. Notice this isn’t a temptation to sin, but the enjoyment at the very thought of sin. One has said, “The close we are to God the more sensitive we will be toward sin,” in other words it should have a grieving effect on us when we think of sin, not a relishing of the thought. What are we thinking about? What are we desiring? You know we build our own appetites. Have you ever thought of some kind of food you like, and then before long you are really hungry for that, or you see something you want somewhere you like and before long if it’s within your means or someone else has changed your mind you will have it. These things aren’t wrong as long as they are kept in perspective, however we must be careful that our thoughts won ‘t lead us into covetousness.
I. What is regarding iniquity? - It does not mean if I have found sin in my heart, we are unable to search our own hearts properly. That is why David prayed in another place, “Search me and try me…” He knew that humanity is pretty lenient on themselves, but does God see anything inside, Is he showing me anything, is he talking to me about anything?
Regard - To love and esteem; to practice; WEBSTER
1. It really means - do I enjoy or get a kick out of some of my past sins, or are there sin’s I’d kind of like to do if I knew I could get away with them? Have I kept back part of the price and not really gone to the bottom and forsaken all yes ALL sin? Do I regard or revere it in my hear?
II. Sometimes seekers at an altar are sorry their sins were found out instead of repenting, or sorry they got caught instead of because they wronged almighty God,
1. Like the story of one man seeking, not getting anywhere finally they asked him, “Is God asking you to do anything?’ He looked up at them and replied, “No, but I can think of a few things he could,”
III. This is a major hindrance to prayer - One has said, Nothing hinders prayer like iniquity harboured in the breast; as with Cain, so with us, sin lieth at the door, and blocks the passage. If thou listen to the devil, God will not listen to thee. If thou refusest to hear God's commands, he will surely refuse to hear thy prayers.
The songwriter said -
“Search me, O God, and know my heart today
Try me, O Savior; Know my thoughts I pray
See if there be some wicked way in me
Cleanse me from every sin and set me free
I Praise Thee Lord, for cleansing me from sin
Fulfill thy Word and make me pure within
Fill me with fire, where once I burned with shame
Grant my desire to magnify Thy name
Lord take my life and make it wholly Thine
Fill my poor heart with Thy great love divine
Take all my will my passion self and pride
I now surrender Lord in me abide
O Holy Ghost Revival comes from thee
Send a revival start the work in me
Thy Word declares Thou will supply our need
For blessing now O Lord, I humbly plead.
