He Came To Take Us Home John 17:12
We know that Jesus was the Great Shepherd. He tells us that himself. What he doesn’t tell us is all that the shepherd goes thru. I was reading Spurgeon Devotions this morning and was struck by this thought. He mentioned Jacob’s work description found in Genesis 31:38-40 this twenty years have i been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have i not eaten. That which was torn of beasts i brought not unto thee; i bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. Thus i was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.
Salvation is a wonderful thing, and to think that Jesus our shepherd went thru so much to find us. It’s no wonder Charles Wesley, just a few days after his conversion May 21st, 1738 penned these words. You won’t find them all in our hymnal. (Read from song book)
It’s wonderful to be saved. It’s wonderful to be kept.
Turning over to the next chapter (John 18) You find after Jesus had prayed and they had sang a hymn they went out and it wasn’t too long that Judas and the mob came to get Jesus. He asked who they came for, the told him Jesus of Nazareth, his reply, “I am he” and they fell back. Jesus asks them again who they are after , again they reply “Jesus” Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
Speaking of the Wesley’s earlier the story is told that their dad was not a popular man because of some of his views. Someone in protest to this torched their house. As the large family was gathering outside they looked around and Jack was missing. Looking up in the burning house they saw his figure silhouetted in the window. They stacked up on each other’s shoulder’s till they could reach him.
I’m glad when we get to the gate there won’t be a head missing. He’s going to get us all the way home. Thru many dangers toils and snares we have already come tis grace has brought us safe thus far and grace will lead us home.
