Moses' birth and education 2:1-10 The daughter of Pharaoh (Thutmose I) was probably Hatshepsut who was a very significant person in Egyptian history (v. 5). On the run. • Midian • Becomes a shepherd for Jethro, priest of Midian • Shepherds in Egypt • Joseph's family-keepers of livestock • "every shepherd is loathsome to the Egyptians" • Moses' Egyptian background • Humiliation • Chapter 3 Moses vs. Chapter 2 Moses • He has learned something • Ex 3:1-10 • Who would save the people? • Vs. 8 - God • Vs. 10 - Moses • Both - God works through people • Used Moses to call Israel • Used Moses to condemn the Pharaoh • BUT every part of Israel's salvation was from God • Plagues • Red Sea • Safety in the wilderness • God works through people, but He didn't work through Moses the first time. • What's different? • God's timing • Moses' attitude • Ex 3:11 • Look how Moses has changed • WAS the powerful man who supposed that God would bring deliverance through him • BECAME the man who said to God, "Who am I?" • WAS important man of the royal household • BECAME a lowly shepherd • Learned humility over 40 years • Humility was key to Moses' salvation • By grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone • Moses' faith • Promise to Abraham • Later, forgiveness by sacrifices • They pointed to Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God • OT faith in what God had revealed, as all revelation pointed to Jesus, the fulfillment of the Law and Prophets • Our faith in greater revelation of Jesus Christ • Son of God • Lived as a man • Died for our sins • Rose again • Waiting in heaven to return for those who put their faith in Him and in His promises • BUT, humility is part of that faith • Pride says: • I don't need help. • I can save myself. • I'm good enough on my own. • Pharisees (self-righteousness and karma) • Humility says: • I know who I am (and God knows) • Sinner • Justly condemned • Lost • Unable to save myself • Saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, but faith includes humble recognition of who you are • Agreement with God • Submission to Jesus as Lord • Solomon's proverbs • Pride New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update Chapter 16 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished. • Proud of heart (self-righteous) • Punishment for sins • Humility New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update Chapter 22 The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD Are riches, honor and life. • Riches in heaven • Honored place before God's glory • Eternal life in the presence of He who IS life • The first step - Know who you are • Then know who Jesus is • The innocent who paid the price for the guilty • The sinless who became sin so that we might become His righteousness • Pride says I'm good enough • Humility says I could never be good enough. Humility says I know who I am. • Humility bows before God and says "Who am I that you are mindful of me?" • And Grace answers from the cross: "You are the one for whom I died." Page .
