Rev. Res Spears / General
Handyman story
• The visit
• The promise
• The mirror
• The failure
• The conclusion
• I'm not that guy
• I know who I am.
• When I forget, I often find myself humbled, if not humiliated
• Intro
• A man who thought he was God's fixer.
• Pride and self-reliance
• Failure and ran away
• God WOULD use this man
• But first, humility
• The story of the life of Moses
• Pride and humility
• Connection to grace
• Pride = enemy; God wouldn't use Moses' pride
• Humility = opened him to receive God's grace
• Ex 2
• Background
• Joseph's line in Egypt
• Pharaoh's Thutmose 1 decree
• Ex 2:1-4
• Wicker basket = ark, like Noah's
• Faith of this mother (her hard choice to trust God to provide a way)
• Faith of the sister to wait and watch
• God would provide a way
• Ex 2:5-9
• God's response to the mother's faith
• Saved the boy
• She became his nurse
• She was paid to nurse him
• Ex 2:10
• Look at the change of fortune for Moses - household of Pharaoh, son of the princess
Tom Constable's Expository Notes on the Bible 3. Moses' birth and education 2:1-10
The daughter of Pharaoh (Thutmose I) was probably Hatshepsut who was a very significant person in Egyptian history (v. 5). She later assumed co-regency with Thutmose III and ruled as the fifth Pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty
• Life as royalty
• Josephus' account
• General/Ethiopia
• Married Ethiopian princess
• Whether true or not, raised as royalty, with power and prestige
• Went to his head?
• Ex 2:11-12
• Good intentions
• Heb 11:24-26
• He loved his Hebrew brothers and sisters
• He had faith in God's promises to Abraham
• But there's more
• Stephen's account (Acts 7:22-25)
• Deliverance = salvation
• Any evidence of God's having sent Moses for deliverance/salvation?
• NO. A man of power in words and deeds
• Powerful men go out and do. Prideful. They often don't wait on God.
• God would work through Moses, but not yet.
• He was missing something.
• Everything changes
• Seen. Challenged. On the run.
• Midian
• Becomes a shepherd for Jethro, priest of Midian
• Shepherds in Egypt
• Joseph's family-keepers of livestock
• "every shepherd is loathsome to the Egyptians"
• Moses' Egyptian background
• Humiliation
• Chapter 3 Moses vs. Chapter 2 Moses
• He has learned something
• Ex 3:1-10
• Who would save the people?
• Vs. 8 - God
• Vs. 10 - Moses
• Both - God works through people
• Used Moses to call Israel
• Used Moses to condemn the Pharaoh
• BUT every part of Israel's salvation was from God
• Plagues
• Red Sea
• Safety in the wilderness
• God works through people, but He didn't work through Moses the first time.
• What's different?
• God's timing
• Moses' attitude
• Ex 3:11
• Look how Moses has changed
• WAS the powerful man who supposed that God would bring deliverance through him
• BECAME the man who said to God, "Who am I?"
• WAS important man of the royal household
• BECAME a lowly shepherd
• Learned humility over 40 years
• Humility was key to Moses' salvation
• By grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone
• Moses' faith
• Promise to Abraham
• Later, forgiveness by sacrifices
• They pointed to Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God
• OT faith in what God had revealed, as all revelation pointed to Jesus, the fulfillment of the Law and Prophets
• Our faith in greater revelation of Jesus Christ
• Son of God
• Lived as a man
• Died for our sins
• Rose again
• Waiting in heaven to return for those who put their faith in Him and in His promises
• BUT, humility is part of that faith
• Pride says:
• I don't need help.
• I can save myself.
• I'm good enough on my own.
• Pharisees (self-righteousness and karma)
• Humility says:
• I know who I am (and God knows)
• Sinner
• Justly condemned
• Lost
• Unable to save myself
• Saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, but faith includes humble recognition of who you are
• Agreement with God
• Submission to Jesus as Lord
• Solomon's proverbs
• Pride
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update Chapter 16
Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished.
• Proud of heart (self-righteous)
• Punishment for sins
• Humility
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update Chapter 22
The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD Are riches, honor and life.
• Riches in heaven
• Honored place before God's glory
• Eternal life in the presence of He who IS life
• The first step - Know who you are
• Then know who Jesus is
• The innocent who paid the price for the guilty
• The sinless who became sin so that we might become His righteousness
• Pride says I'm good enough
• Humility says I could never be good enough. Humility says I know who I am.
• Humility bows before God and says "Who am I that you are mindful of me?"
• And Grace answers from the cross: "You are the one for whom I died."
