Text - Matthew 16.18-19

Matthew 16:18–19 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Background

Jesus reveals to Peter His plans for his people
He calls them “church”
He places them upon a “rock”
foundation - strong, stable
personal revelation of Christ to every believer
The kingdom of heaven
the same as the kingdom of God
“of God” - indicates to whom the kingdom belongs (God)
“of heaven” - indicates the characteristic nature of the kingdom (heavenly)
“present aspect” of the kingdom
the church is the visible expression
believers are -
members of the kingdom
heirs of the kingdom
authorities in the kingdom
John 1:12 NKJV
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Main Point

The keys symbolize the authority

Matthew 16:19 NKJV
19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Keys are given to stewards
a steward is a trusted servant, exercising authority over his master’s possessions
Shebna and Eliakim
Isaiah 22:15 NKJV
15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts: “Go, proceed to this steward, To Shebna, who is over the house, and say:
he was steward of the royal house
but he abused his authority
Isaiah 22:16–19 NKJV
16 ‘What have you here, and whom have you here, That you have hewn a sepulcher here, As he who hews himself a sepulcher on high, Who carves a tomb for himself in a rock? 17 Indeed, the Lord will throw you away violently, O mighty man, And will surely seize you. 18 He will surely turn violently and toss you like a ball Into a large country; There you shall die, and there your glorious chariots Shall be the shame of your master’s house. 19 So I will drive you out of your office, And from your position he will pull you down.
his stewardship was given to Eliakim
Isaiah 22:20–22 NKJV
20 ‘Then it shall be in that day, That I will call My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah; 21 I will clothe him with your robe And strengthen him with your belt; I will commit your responsibility into his hand. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem And to the house of Judah. 22 The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; So he shall open, and no one shall shut; And he shall shut, and no one shall open.
the key of the house of David
he has power to open and to close
Jesus’s stewardship of God’s creation
Revelation 3:7 NKJV
7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens”:
He was given authority over heaven and earth
Matthew 28:18 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Believers are stewards of the kingdom of God today
keepers of the mayteries of God
keepers of the manifold grace of God
Jesus Christ and the saints are not just servants.
Jesus is the Son of God who as Son of Man was tasked with restoring the kingdom of God
Believers are sons and daughters of God who are tasked with working Christ

The keys were given to “counter” the “gates of hades”

Jesus reveals the existences of the “gates of hades”
gates of hades signify the schemes of the devil
Deception
Accusation
Destruction
Rule
gates of hades signify the strongholds of the enemy
Satan protects his domain from God
blindness
2 Corinthians 4:3–4 NKJV
3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
ignorance (hardness, callousness)
Ephesians 4:18 NKJV
18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;
fear (of death, etc)
Hebrews 2:14–15 NKJV
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
SIN is the most powerful weapon in the hand of the enemy
Jesus provides His church with the most powerful means at His disposal - the Master Keys!
a master key has capability to open all locks

The keys were given to bind and to loose

Matthew 16:19 NKJV
19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
bind - to hold in obligation or accountable; PROHIBIT
loose - to annul, to untie from an obligation; PERMIT
John 20:21–23 NKJV
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
The church is given authority to LOOSE people so they are able to enter the kingdom of God.
through gospel preaching
through baptism
through laying on of hands
The church has authority to BIND or LOOSE people in their sins and errors so that they are removes from the kingdom of God
forgive or disfellowship
Matthew 18:15–18 NKJV
15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. 18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
NOTE - THIS AUTHORITY IS EXECUTED INDEPENDENTLY. THE CHURCH EXECUTES THE AUTHORITY ONLY BECAUSE SHE UNDERSTANDS THIS TO BE GOD’S PERFECT WILL.

Conclusion

The keys of the kingdom is in every believer today -
we are all called to believe and proclaim the gospel of Christ
we are all responsible for the care of the church and all its members
The proper way to use the authority is by SPEAKING
Jesus spoke with authority
Jesus taught with authority
The power is manifested when the mouth speaks with authority
note - the sons of sceva spoke WITHOUT authority
but the apostles spoke with authority
BY OUR MOUTH WE INVOKE THE POWER -
OF THE BLOOD OF JESUS
OF THE NAME OF JESUS
OF THE WORD OF GOD
