I. Introduction

We interrupted our giving series last week to look at some of the pressing concerns in our country as a result of misinformation, outright lies and deceptions and the aftermath of people stirred to act on them. But, today we want to get back to our series on grace giving.

After Christmas Sunday, we looked at the ‘Worship of the Wise Men’ to remind us of God’s love and grace to have His son born into the world and that He has given Jesus to us to deliver us from sin and death and to bring us back to God. We see God as the infinitely greatest Giver and we graciously give in response to His incomparable grace to us.

Then, in “The Heart of Worship” we looked at the giving of King David who prepared to leave a great monument to the LORD and commissioned his son Solomon to build the first temple to the LORD in Jerusalem, a place where the LORD would put His name and in which He would dwell, drawing people into the worship of His great name.

Today, in the church age, where we worship God by the Spirit and glory in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:3), we examine the responsibility of the congregation’s giving to support its biblical leadership. As we continue to think about grace giving, we want to look at some rules set forth to guide us in our practice of supporting pastors in the church as well as restraining excesses that are often taken by pastors in today’s congregations.

1 Timothy 5:17–21 ESV
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.” 19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear. 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.

II. Rules about honoring Elders (v. 17)

1 Timothy 5:17 ESV
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

A. What is an elder?

1 Timothy 3:1 ESV
1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.
Acts 20:28 ESV
28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
Acts 20:17 ESV
17 Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him.
1 Peter 5:1–2 ESV
1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;

B. What does it mean to “rule”

C. What is double honor?

Does not mean double ‘pay’ but two-fold
Compensation (Galatians 6:6; 1 Corinthians 9:13–14; Philippians 4:15)
Respect for the office and the ones fulfilling their duties

D. Why are only laboring in preaching and teaching mentioned?

III. Two Witnesses for Support (v. 18)

1 Timothy 5:18 ESV
18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”

A. Moses (v. 18a)

John 5:46 ESV
46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.
Deuteronomy 25:4 ESV

B. Jesus (v. 18b)

Luke 10:7 ESV
7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house.

IV. Disciplining elders (vs. 19-20)

1 Timothy 5:19 ESV
19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.

A. Charges brought must have two or three witnesses’ support. (v. 19)

1 Timothy 5:20 ESV
20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.

B. Persistently sinning elders are to be rebuked. (v. 20)

V. Paul charges Timothy to keep these rules (v. 21)

1 Timothy 5:21 ESV
21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.

A. In the presence of God, Christ Jesus, and the elect angels
