Introduction:

Our view of the scriptures will have the greatest impact on the way we see God and the way we live our lives for God.

The reading and studying of the Scriptures is vital to having an intimate relationship with God and to our growth and maturity as His children.

Why should we view the Scriptures as significant in our daily lives? What impact will they have on my life? Can I trust what they say? How will I really benefit from what they have to say?

I. THE SCRIPTURES SET US ON THE RIGHT PATH. (v.14-15)

2 Timothy 3:14–15 ESV
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Salvation is the intended destination of the Scriptures.

Romans 15:4 ESV
4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
James 1:21 ESV
21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

II. THE SCRIPTURES ARE THE VERY WORDS OF GOD. (v.16a

2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

The Word of God can be Trusted.

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
2 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

The Word of God is what sustains us in times of temptation.

Matthew 4:4 ESV
4 But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

The Word Of God is Alive.

Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

III. THE SCRIPTURES ARE NECESSARY FOR GROWTH AND MATURITY. (v.16b-17)

2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Teaching- Timothy’s responsibility was to teach the Truth.

Reproof- Timothy was to rebuke the false teachers and their doctrine, yet admonish those who may have been misled by their teaching.

Correction- Timothy was to help believers grow in their walk with God.

Training In Righteousness- Applying the truths of God’s word.
