TAG . . . You’re It

Matthew 26:36-46

FBC Winona – Wednesday, June 25, 2008 – (First Wednesday night)

Tonight is a night of beginnings for me and for you . . .

·         Tonight we are going to cover a topic that is fundamental to the Christian life

·         Hopefully will be a time of re-commitment for some

·         A time of discovery for others

Matthew 26:36-46

36Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

42He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

43When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Pray

·         Jesus was coming to the end of a long and difficult journey

  • He was about to embark on the most painful experience we could imagine
  • What He needed most at this time, was some time with His Father
  • Jesus, the Son of God, the Savior of the world – Needed time with His Father
  • He needed power, He needed strength, He needed direction, He needed refuge

The Significance of Gesthemane

·         Means literally “oil press”

·         How does an oil press work?

·         Oil-press consists of two large, flat rocks.

·         One of the rocks is placed on the bottom.

·         The olives are placed on top of its flat surface,

·         an even heavier flat rock is lowered down upon the olives.

·         Slowly, as the rock is lowered, the oil of the olives starts seeping out of the olives.

·         The pressure is tremendous, and the oil starts to run over the surface of the rock,

·         as it runs over the edge, every drop is collected, none of the valuable oil goes to waste.

Jesus went to the oil press

·         He was literally having every drop squeezed out of Him

·         Of energy, of his mental state, of his physical being, of his Spirit

·         “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (v. 38)

·         Jesus is sorrowful because He’s beginning to carry the weight of the sin of man

·         He went where He HAD to go – to where He could meet with His Father

·         He knew what His mission was, but He needed some intimate time

·         He knew He was “IT”

Remember the child’s game of tag???

  • Someone is “it”, Sometimes “It” would quit, The result of that – “game over”
  • Phone tag – another example

Tonight we will use the word TAG to illustrate the most important aspect of your Christian life

THEME - What am I talking about? The Daily Quiet Time – Your personal devotional time

Time Alone with God – TAG . . . you’re it

Jesus believed in it – modeled it for us

·         Good News - We have access to that same power, direction, refuge, strength

TIME –

  • Same amount each day for everyone – but never seems like enough
  • If we don’t manage it, it will manage us (example, Seminary)
  • The truth is – we make time to do what we really want to do
  • if it’s not convenient to find time for God – it often gets pushed aside
  • Anything worthwhile requires an investment of time
  • Is God top on your priority list in regard to time – Must determine your priorities

ALONE – (refer to the text)

  • Jesus Himself had to get alone to be with His Father
  • No distraction, no outside influences, no temptations
  • Just Him and God, just You and God
  • God speaks to us often in a still, small voice – how can you hear it?

GOD –

Your time must be God-focused, God-centered and God-led

James 4:7-10 - 7Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

text says “come near to God and he will come near to you” (KJV Draw nigh, NASB Draw near)

  • The word Draw implies action, That is the drawing of the Holy Spirit
  • God pursues a loving relationship with you that is real and personal
  • We don’t seek God – He’s always there – we just have to establish Him as priority
