“The Person We Praise”

Jehovah-Nissi

This name confronts us in Exodus 17:15. Nissi means “a standard” or “a banner.” Moses was saying, “God is our banner of identity, our flag of victory, our shining pole of gathering.” When the battle rages fiercely, we are to stay with the “standard” -  Jehovah-Nissi! Praise Jehovah-Nissi!

Jehovah-M’Kaddesh

This name is found in Leviticus 20:8. It means “to set apart for divine use” and follows the command on God’s part for our holiness. “I am the Lord, who makes you holy [Jehovah-M’Kaddesh]!” The word was used for articles consecrated for the worship of Jehovah. Now we are the temples of God, and God lives in us through the Holy Spirit! He is the One who makes us holy. Praise Jehovah-M’Kaddesh!

Jehovah-Shalom

In Judges 6:24 Gideon builds an altar, calling it Jehovah-Shalom. The word shalom means “peace” but is also translated “full, complete, finished, or perfected.” (Read the story of Gideon in Judges 6:11-24)

In a time of war Gideon found that God not only gave peace, He is peace. This is a rest that all people need. Jehovah is our complete peace. Praise Jehovah-Shalom!

Jehovah-Rohi

The first statement in Psalm 23:1 is the next name for God that evokes our praise. It means “God is our Shepherd.” The spirit of the name is perfectly carried out in the remainder of the Psalm.

Revelation 7:17 adds to this picture: “For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Praise the Lamb who is our Shepherd! Praise Jehovah-Rohi!

Jehovah-Tsidkenu

The word tsidek means “to be stiff or straight.” Essentially it simply means “to be right.” Jeremiah 23:5-6

God is “the entirely just and righteous One.” Righteousness is straight and narrow. God’s measurements are exact. He requires righteousness. This name reveals that He becomes to us what He requires of us. In

I Corinthians 1:30 we are informed that “Christ has become our righteousness.” Praise Jehovah-Tsidkenu!

Jehovah-Shammah

This name for God appears at the very end of the book of Ezekiel (48:35). It means “the Lord is there.” Jehovah-Shammah is in us! Praise Jehovah-Shammah!

Having reviewed the eight covenant or redemptive names for our God, I want you to remember several important truths:

1.     God’s character is revealed through His names.

2.     God reveals our need through His names.

3.     The nature of our redemption is revealed through His names.

4.     We can know what to expect of life through His names.

5.     We can come to know God better through His names.

6.     We can come to know the riches of our true identity through His names.

7.     Praising the names of God brings to light that particular characteristic.

One great and glorious fact we need to remember is this:

ALL THAT GOD IS, HE IS IN HIS NAMES; ALL THAT HE IS IN HIS NAMES, HE IS IN CHRIST. ALL THAT HE IS IN CHRIST, HE IS IN US! Praise Jehovah!
