Main Idea 1: John 11:1-16
Main Idea 1: John 11:1-16
Jesus doesn’t always work the way we assume he should. And often that is for more than our good.
Jesus doesn’t always work the way we assume he should. And often that is for more than our good.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
The pair of verses turns on the ‘So’ of verse 6. Jesus specifically stayed longer where he was because he loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. One would think that, given this love, Jesus would move faster. Or perhaps heal Lazarus from a distance. Instead, he allows Lazarus to die. Bringing Lazarus back from the dead was more important than preventing him from dying.
Does it ever feel like Jesus is intentionally remaining at a distance? When in the past has this happened, only for you to see the greater plan later in your life?
Main Idea 2: John 11:17-27
Main Idea 2: John 11:17-27
Jesus is the resurrection and the life.
Jesus is the resurrection and the life.
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Remember Jesus’ seven “I AM” statements. This is the sixth. But what does he mean? Jesus clarifies the “resurrection” and the “life” in what follows. He that believes and dies will live again (resurrection). He that believes (while he is still alive) shall never ‘die’. But what does that mean?
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
17 Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
For the Love of God, Volume One January 5
Even many Christians think of their faith almost exclusively in terms of what it does for them now, rather than in terms of preparing them for eternity such that it transforms how they live now.
