Handout
36 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
INTRO:
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
Last week:
Our deepest problem, we are under a curse
God’s wrath
Why are you under God’s wrath?
- YOU owe a debt
Why does someone hope in their works? To pay off that debt
1. The Debt You Owe
1. The Debt You Owe
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
God demands:
- Glory
- Righteousness
- Obedience
- Worship
- Trust
- Holiness
you have Sinned and fallen short
How have I sinned? What have I done?
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
- we all have done this
- Eternal beings not temporary
- Exchanged eternal joy for momentary satisfaction

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For the wages of sin is death...
= This is the Cost!
God’s holiness demands this
Rebellion against Him results in destruction
If the verse ends there it’s trouble
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Redeemed = by payment of a price to recover from the power of another, to ransom, buy off
Bought you from something else
You are in debt to death
Price for your sin is death - Rom. 6:23
The GOSPEL - God gives life through Christ
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
ILLUS: Picture of the Passion
Hard to look at
Makes us uncomfortable
Because that is our sin - That is what it took to pay our debt…and it is PAID IN FULL!
APP: Jesus took care of it all…your part, repent and believe
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Repent and believe
Your sins created a debt
You can’t pay that debt
Christ fulfills the payment
Trust, obey, and worship Him
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
(Maybe a tie in, discuss in Sermon Lab)
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
