Revelation 11:15-19 (KJV)
15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,
17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.
18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
The book of Revelation is a book of mystery and intrigue. One that simply is hard to comprehend or fully understand. It is the only book in the Bible that promises a blessing to the reader, but at the same time it is a book of revelations and visions and dreams. Pictures full of symbolism, typology and prophecy. Many claim to have the correct interpretation and really we won't know for sure how it will all turn out until it happens. Our passage however is one that leaves no question as to what is going to take place.
I don't want to concern ourselves with the when, as the only time frame we are given is when the seventh angel sounds. But I want us to focus on the what. What happens in this passage.
I want to read a devotional written by Bro. Gary Bowel on this passage - Read page 189-190 of Precious Things From Patmos.
We have a power struggle, and a victor a champion a conqueror. We have one who "reigns." Now the language is interesting here it is speaking of "our Lord and his Christ" which makes me think of Hebrews where it says that "He (Jesus) is seated at the right hand of the Father. That "HE" shall reign. I want us to look at this a little bit
What does it mean to reign? To control, to dominate, to be king over or ruler over.
He shall reign
Over the kingdoms of this world - All the kingdoms of this world at the present are under the control of Satan - the prince of the power of the air. However during this time all of the kingdoms of the world, become the kingdoms of God and his Christ. This is a joyous time as the twenty four elders fall on their face and begin to worship God, " Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. "With great power and authority (Rod of iron)- He will rule over them with great power and authority. A time of righteousness and holiness like we have never seen or has ever been. Holiness unto the Lord will be written not on just the front walls of a few camp meeting tabernacles but even on the horses bridles, the things that move and transport things. or in our language today, it would be written on the cover of the license plate or bumper sticker on the car. It will be on the pots and pans, the people washing the dishes will look at them and see, "The Lord Reigneth" Holiness unto the Lord. Forever and ever- This isn't a temporary kingship - but is forever and ever eternal never ending. Queen Elisabeth has reigned over the United Kingdom for 64 years. Last year she broke the record and became the longest living reigning monarch they changed their 1st class postage stamp from red to regal purple with the slogan "Long may she reign over us" written on it. But there will come a day when Queen Elisabeth will breath her last and have to relinquish her control to someone elseBut Christ he will reign forever and ever - of his kingdom the prophet Isaiah said, there will be no end. it will continue forever and ever how else can you say it. He will reign.
I like Leondard E Smith's song "Our God Reigns" let's sing that together
How lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him
Who brings good news, good news;
Announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness:
Our God reigns, our God reigns!
Refrain
Our God reigns!
Our God reigns!
Our God reigns!
Our God reigns!
He had no stately form, He had no majesty
That we should be drawn to Him.
He was despised and we took no account of Him.
Our God reigns, our God reigns!
It was our sin and guilt that bruised and wounded Him.
It was our sin that brought Him down.
When we like sheep had gone astray our Shepherd came
And on His shoulders bore our shame.
Meek as a lamb that’s led out to the slaughterhouse,
Dumb as a sheep before its shearer,
His life ran down upon the ground like pouring rain
That we might be born again.
Out from the tomb He came with grace and majesty;
He is alive, He is alive.
God loves us so, see here His hands, His feet, His side
Yes we know, He is alive.
Refrain
