WHere are we?

Buffered Self
Immanence
Explosion of IDeas
Christainity as harmful to society
Subtraction theory Religion and not religion -= 10, 10 -1
Church of England - 1348 and 1350 plague church asking for fasting and prayer, in HIV AIDS 90s medical reserach
Praying for our daily berad and its at the grocery store
exclusive humanism - goal
immance - only frame
No listening to authority. including our bodies. We have to be free.
Apathy towards God. We are marginalized.
I mean by this a humanism accepting no final goals beyond human floursihing, nor any allegiance to anything else beyond this floursihing. of no previous soceity was this true.
At the same time… Malaise
THere is a fear and anxiety that our actions, goals, achievements, and life, have a lack of weight, gravity, thickness, substance.
Is there more?
Porous self
bufferesed self - vulnerable to attack not only open to danger but gains meaning and significnce from outside himself.
It’s not seeing the world as is, but imposing meaning on the world.
Human flourishing is the goal, eevrything oblicgation is to be an enhancement
The malaise of modernity - benefits of buffered self - I’m good no matter what. I have power. I control my destiny.
We still have transcendent feelings, experiences but not transcendent reality
3 forms of loss:
Struggle to find significane in life
Crucial moments in life such as birth marriage and death heighten the ense of malaise
Age our authenticty
Super nova explosion. Everybody thinks differently.
What’s true is kind of what works for you.
