A- The Law as Pedagogue
Justification is by faith, not law
This has always been the case
Law is a “pedagogue”
training in basic morals
Sins become transgressions
Pedagogues watch over children
sign of spiritual immaturity
B- Law was Temporary
Law’s other function was to divide
Division: Jew from Gentile (ethnic)
Division: Slave and free (economic)
Division: Male and Female (gender)
It is not that the Law is not God’s Word, but that it is not his final Word.
In short, the Law was God’s Word for his people living in a particular time and place. But Christ brought New Creation, and his people must live like they’ve been newly created.
There is no longer division between God’s people, just as God’s people no longer need guidance from rules and laws, but are lead by the spirit.
C- Lawlessness: Yea or Nay?
Does Paul then advocate for lawlessness? Μη γενοιτω!
Not under Jewish law, but the law of Christ.
This is, in fact, a higher standard than the law. The law was put in place for children, but Christ calls us to full spiritual maturity.
