The Need of Salvation

1 John 5:11-13

Introduction:
“Pastor, I wonder if I’m saved.”
Sometimes I think I am, and then again I am troubled with doubts.
Can a person really know that they are saved?
The need of salvation- Sin: Romans 3:9,19,23
Romans 3:9 KJV 1900
9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Romans 3:19 KJV 1900
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Three things bring forth the judgment of God against man’s sin

I. Because Of What Man Is- A Sinner

Romans 5:18,19
A. Adam’s act made him a sinner and all of his family
B. It is a nature problem-Jeremiah13:23;Matthew7:18
1. David’s recognition-Psalms51:5
2. Born Wrong-Psalms 53:8
3. The Publican concerned about what he was-Luke 18:13
4. Root of sin-Mark 7:21-23
5. Only evil continually-Genesis 6:5-7
6. Paul recognized it-Romans 7:14,17

II. Because Of What Man Has Done-Sinned

“Positive”-Romans 3:23
Evil deeds determine measure of judgment
A. He has gone out of the way-Romans 3:12
1. His own way-Isaiah 53:6
B. Tongues used for deceit-Romans 3:13-14
1. Full of cursing and bitterness-James 3:5-10
C. Feet swift to shed blood-Romans 3:15,16
1. Violence
2. Hate
3. Leaving destruction and misery
D. Receive judgment of deeds-Luke 23:40,41
E. Render according to works-Romans 2:6;Rev. 20:12

III. Because Of What He Has Not Done-‘Come short of the glory of God’

Note-Negative
A. Man failed to do good-James 4:17
1. Hasn’t Understood-Romans 3:11
2. Hasn’t sought God-Romans 3:11
3. Hasn’t brought profit-Romans 3:12
4. Hasn’t done good-Romans 3:12
5. Hasn’t known way of peace-Romans 3:17
6. Hasn’t feared God-Romans 3:18
B. Failure to do right
1. Came not-Judges 5:23
2. Doeth not-Matthew 7:26
3. Did not-Matthew 25:45-46
4. Believe not-John 16:9
5. Know not-2 Thessalonians 1:9
6. Obey Not-2 Thessalonians 1:8
7. Love Not-1 Corinthians 16:22

IV. The Remedy-The death of Christ

A. He died for what we were-“for sin”
1. Romans 8:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21
B. He died for what we have done
1. 1 Peter 3:18; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4
C. He died for what we failed to do
1. John 17:4
2. “Finished the work”, obedient unto death-Phil. 3:8
3. We are accepted in Him-Ephesians 1:6
