I. THE SIN NATURE OF THE PEOPLE IS REVEALED IN THEIR ACTIONS

A. When a People Allow the Intoxicating Effects of Promiscuity and Alcohol to Interfere with their Understanding They Become Disobedient to God’s Word.
You may be asking why am I connecting promiscuity with wine. Both has an affect on a persons reasoning. Both have an affect on a person’s mind, will and emotion. The Fruit of the Spirit, self control, is lost . People often yield to he human spirit and not the Holy Spirit when under the influence of promiscuity and alcohol. Paul states this about mankind, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23, NASB95) The believer is to yield his spirit, soul and body to the Holy Spirit. A promiscuous person, like a person intoxicated is guided by his own desires and not God’s. Both contribute to impaired judgment when it comes to obeying God’s will.
B. CHRISTIANS WHO SAY THEY LOVE GOD ARE TO Be OBEDIENT TO HIS WORD
The first command for Israel was what? “Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:1–3, NASB95) In the New Testament Jesus declared, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27, NASB95) Believers in the Old and New Testament are to have no other god’s. Israel had turn to the counsel of god’s and magic. The priest and prophets who were to teach God’s word to the people should have proclaim to them the truth from Psalm 1:1-2, “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:1–2, NASB95)
Today, people may not seek counsel from Baal but many seek counsel from graven images, such as found in Hinduism, and Buddhism. Many seek counsel from science over the Word of God. Still, for many it is the gods of culture and not the unchanging Word of God. As then, today the spirit of promiscuity is leading people astray and they are disobedient to God’s Word.
C. In verse 13 Hosea reveals about the actions of the people’s giving sacrifices. Hosea states the result of these sacrifices where daughters who act promiscuously and daughters-in-law who commit adultery.
These where sacrifices to false gods, which were not pleasing to God. They were self-centered sacrifices. The thing I feel lead to share with you about sacrifice, the sacrifice which pleases God. In the Old Testament David gives this understanding of a sacrifice which pleases God, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17, NASB95) This was not truth of the Priest and Prophets of Hosea day. They were to teach to Israel Scriptural truths, but they not only did not teach these truths, they did not practice them.
In the New Testament Paul reveals the truth about the sacrifice which please God, “Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.” (Romans 12:1, CSB) The sacrifice of David in Psalm 51:17 and the sacrifice of Paul in Romans 12:1 are pleasing to God and reveals to others, in this case daughters and daughters-in- law, a man surrender to God and obedient to His Word.
D. In verse 14 God states He will not punish the daughters for acts of promiscuity, or daughters-in-law for committing adultery because the men had themselves committed these acts. There are many explanations in commentaries on this verse but let me share with you my thoughts.
All of us will give an account for our sins, so the women will not be found innocent of these sins. Men are women are equal in the Bible but they have different function or rolls in the family. Men are responsible for setting the example for their daughters and daughters-in-law as well as their wives to follow. These men were not. They were committing the acts of promiscuity with prostitutes outside and inside the temples where they gave their sacrifices. Throughout Scripture, men are to set an example of godly life pleasing to God by being obedient to His Word. The priest and the prophets were not revealing understanding of the Scriptures in their teaching or actions and neither were husbands to their wives, daughters or sons. Their spirit of promiscuity , lust of the flesh had ruled in their lives and now in the lives of their daughters and daughters-in-law. When a nation turns away from God’s word, they fail to to discern the sin or its effects on the nation. The nation who spirit is that of promiscuity is destine for punishment.
CONCLUSION: Today, in America promiscuity is not condemned. Fornication, adultery is not only a culture god in the lost world, it is prevalent within the Christian community. God’s Word is clear, sexual relations are to be between a husbands and wives. Men should set the example and wives, daughters and sons should follow a godly example of obedience to God’s Word.
