The Power of the Holy Spirit
The Power of the Holy Spirit
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Introduction: As we continue this series Power, today I wish to look at The Power of the Holy Spirit.
Whether we say Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit we Are speaking of the same person. He is the third person of the Godhead. He is God.
Our text today, involves our Christ encouraging His disciples as He predicts His death. No doubt this is a tough thing for the disciples to hear but nevertheless Jesus tells them that He will ask the Father to give them a helper.
Proposition: The Holy Spirit is present in the life of the believer. The disciple subjects himself to the authority of the Holy Spirit.
Aim: We will subject ourselves to the authority of the Holy Spirit
Question: Why must we subject to the authority of the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is Our Helper (v.16)
In this text Jesus promised the disciples “another Helper.” Helper is the Greek word parakleton which comes from two words, “along side” and “called,” hence, “one called along side to help.”
The Holy Spirit is a Helper who is called alongside to help the believer.
Jesus informs His disciples that the Holy Spirit will be with them just as He has been with them. The Spirit will be a present authority in their lives. The Holy Spirit will not leave them He will be ever present.
What does this presence mean?
It is to remind us of the presence of God. This comfort and help is to remind us that we are not alone.
We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to do what God requires us to do.
The Holy Spirit Indwells the Believer (v.17)
Jesus promises His disciples the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. That is the Spirit will take possession and dwell in the believer.
Jesus promised the Spirit would indwell believers and that the indwelling would be permanent. This permanent indwelling would not be for a select few but for all believers
Spirituality
The Holy Spirit creates in us the capacity to become spiritual. The Believer who has been filled with the Spirit will be led by the Spirit. This is that authority.
What would deny the this spirituality?
When a man rejects the Spirit and subjects himself to the works of the flesh. (It is called carnality.)
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Carnal believers are those who can come to church; shout , talk about how much they love The Lord, but leave and cuss all week, lie all the time, fornicate, club hop and drink more than a fish; because they prefer the flesh before the Spirit.
They don’t believe in God’s power they believe in their flesh and the power it has. This is why it is easy for them to choose everything but that which is Godly.
Jesus tells His disciples that the Spirit is reserved for the believer. The world does not know the Spirit.
Produce Spiritual Fruit
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Application: Resist the flesh and subject yourself to the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Convicts Us (v.26)
Just as Jesus had taught the disciples, so the Holy Spirit would teach them. The Holy Spirit would perform and carry on the same kind of teaching ministry as Christ did. The Holy Spirit would cause them to remember the things Christ had taught them earlier; the Spirit would confirm Christ’s teaching.
