I. What is hope
Definition of hope: Greek ELPIS hope. This noun expresses the idea of hope and expectation.
While this noun does not straightforwardly express the idea of faith, it is used to express the closely related idea of hope in God [1]
HOPE Trustful expectation, particularly with reference to the fulfillment of God’s promises. Biblical hope is the anticipation of a favorable outcome under God’s guidance. More specifically, hope is the confidence that what God has done for us in the past guarantees our participation in what God will do in the future. This contrasts to the world’s definition of hope as “a feeling that what is wanted will happen.”[2]
Worldly hope is a combination of wanting and expecting. It is a little bit more than wishful thinking. There is an inkling that you will get what you are wanting.
Biblical hope is very different than worldly hope, and that is why I am taking the time to show you a little of the difference..

1. Five types of biblical hope
A. Experiential hope
Romans 5:3-5 NLT We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
B. Unshakable Hope
Hebrews 6:19-20 ESV 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
C. The Blessed Hope
Titus 2:13NLT while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed.
D. Hope that is a work of the Spirit
1 cor 13:13 NLT three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.
E. Hope that reflects personal desires
Proverbs 13:12 ESV Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
II. What Hope Does
A. Hope encourages faith
Hebrews 3:6 (NLT) — 6 But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.
B. Hope encourages believers
Isaiah 40:31 (NLT) — 31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
C. Hope encourages godly living
Psalm 25:21 (NLT) — 21 May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you.
D. Hope Encourages evangelism
1 Peter 3:15 (NLT) — 15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.
III. How to put hope in action
1 Peter 1:13-14 NLT13 So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. 14 So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.
One version says self-discipline.
- Putting Hope In Action will take discipline.
- What is discipline? Discipline is…
Choosing what you want most over what you want now.
A. Define the Problem
Neh 1:3 NLT hey said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”
B. Diligently Seek God
Neh 1:4 NLT When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven.
- The importance of getting a word from God
- The importance of having a vision/purpose
C. Do the Work
- This is where most people fail
Neh 2:17-18 NLT But now I said to them, “You know very well what trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire. Let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem and end this disgrace!” 18 Then I told them about how the gracious hand of God had been on me, and about my conversation with the king.
They replied at once, “Yes, let’s rebuild the wall!” So they began the good work.
- You will face oppistiion
Neh 6:3 NLT so I replied by sending this message to them: “I am engaged in a great work, so I can’t come. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you?”
- When you face oppisition knowing what God has called you to helps
