Jesus Our Prophet: Hearing the Voice of God

Hebrews 1:1–2 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

Prophets were very important to the nation of Israel. They played a crucial role in the development of Judaism and Christianity.

The first prophet was Abraham.

The most prominent prophet was Moses.

A prophet was typically brought into the presence of God
Isaiah 6:1 ESV
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.
A prophet was personally commissioned by God to deliver his word to
individuals (i.e. Moses -Pharoah)
and groups (i.e. Jonah-Nineveh).
A prophet was a person who proclaimed a specific message from God.
They spoke with authority.
They spoke with accuracy.
A prophet recieved the Word of God in various ways:
Occasionally God spoke to them directly.
More often, God communicated to them through:
Dreams
Visions
Christophanies (i.e Abraham and Melchizedek, and Moses and the burning bush).
He even spoke through a donkey once!

Moses foretold of Jesus coming as a prophet.

Deuteronomy 18:15–16 ESV
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’
In the OT Moses foretold of Jesus in the NT:

The people believed Jesus was a prophet.

Luke 24:19 ESV
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

Jesus confirmed that he was a prophet.

Matthew 13:57 ESV
And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.”

Our response to Jesus as our Prophet

We must realize that Jesus is the Word (logos).

Jesus is God’s message to us!
John 1:1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

We must realize that Jesus is the Final Word.

Hebrews 1:1–2 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
2 Peter 1:16–21 ESV
For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

We must realize the Jesus is the Perfect Word.

Jesus is the perfect message from God.
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

We hear the voice of God as we read the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit enlightens us.

Jesus Our High Priest: Entering the Presence of God

Hebrews 1:3 ESV
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
The High Priest was in charge of the temple worship.
God chose Aaron to be the first High Priest.
The High Priesthood was a hereditary office that was to be comprised of the descendants of Aaron.
Normally, the High Priest would serve for life.
The High Priest served as intermediaries between God and His people.
According to Leviticus 16, only the High Priest was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies, and only on the Day of Atonement.

Jesus was Chosen by God

Hebrews 5:4–5 ESV
And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;

Jesus is Qualified by an Indestructible Life

Hebrews 7:15–16 ESV
This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.
Hebrews 5:6 ESV
as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

Jesus Restored Our Intimacy with God

Hebrews 10:19–23 ESV
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Our response to Jesus as our High Priest

We should be thankful for the blood of Jesus Christ.
Through his blood, Jesus enacted a new covenant superior to the old one.
It is the blood of Jesus that gives us confidence to enter the holy places, that is the presence of God
It is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
It is trough the blood of Jesus that we can draw near to God.
It is the blood of Jesus that sprinkled our hearts clean.
We should be thankful for the flesh of Jesus Christ because through it we have the opportunity to enter into the presence of God.
Our flesh separates us from God, but Jesus’ flesh gives us access to God.
It is the humanity of Christ that has provided us with a great High Priest.

Jesus Our Sovereign King: Serving the Will God

Hebrews 1:3 ESV
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Hebrews 1:8 ESV
But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
The earliest forms of kings were fearsome warriors. (Saul & David)
They provided populations with security and protection.
Because of this they were exalted and given the power of command.
Many verses metaphorically describe God as a king.
Psalm 99:1–5 ESV
The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he! The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!
Following the period of the judges, God’s people were ruled by human kings.
Kingship in Israel emerged most likely in response to the Philistine threats.
The idea of a king’s “rule” is central to the concept of the Messiah in the New Testament.

Jesus was Recognized as King at His Birth

Matthew 2:1–2 ESV
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Jesus was Recognized as King during His Earthly Ministry

Phillip invited his brother to come and see Jesus…
Nathaniel's response has always intrigued me.
John 1:49 ESV
Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus is Recognized as King for Eternity

1 Timothy 1:17 ESV
To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Our response to Jesus as our Sovereign King

Obedience!

John 14:21 ESV
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

What are you going to do with Jesus?

Maybe your here this morning and you need to look to Jesus as Prophet. You haven’t been listening to the voice of God. And by that, I mean reading the scriptures and inviting the Holy Spirit to teach you.
Or may be you need to come to Jesus as your High Priest. If there has never been a time where you believed the message of God concerning His son. Then maybe today is your day!
Or finally, Maybe you need to bow before Jesus as your Sovereign King. There is an area in your life that you have not surrendered. You have said no to the King of Glory!
This morning I invite you to come to Jesus!
