Sins of the Fathers: Freedom from Generational Curses

Exodus 20:5–6 NKJV
you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Exodus 34:6–7 NKJV
And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

What is a curse?

It is a penalty assigned by God for violating His commandments, laws, principles, etc.
A curse is a spiritual “empowerment to fail” while a blessing is a spiritual “empowerment to succeed”
Curses are words spoken, with some form of spiritual authority (either good or evil), that set-in motion something that will go on generation after generation. Behind the words is a spiritual power (God or Satan). (Derek Prince)

What is a “generational curse”?

A generational curse is a curse that is passed down from generation to generation.
Generational curses are forms of iniquity. Iniquity is the inner “flaw” that drives us toward a particular sin. It is the “bent” in the arrow that keeps us from hitting the bulls-eye.
The original “sin of the fathers” was that of Adam in the fall (1 Corinthians 15:21-22).
Generational curses are activated when a person opens the door to sin. Curses are the penalty for sin. Generational curses perpetuate into following generations when we choose to sin in our generation. As a result, the cycle of generational curses can only be broken when existing generation allows the curse to be broken through faith in the blood of Jesus and obedience to the word of God. This can mark the beginning of a new inroad for “generational blessing.”

Where do curses come from?

God

Deuteronomy 11:26–28 NKJV
“Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.
Deuteronomy 30:19–20 NKJV
I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
Deuteronomy 23:2 NKJV
“One of illegitimate birth shall not enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord.

Others

Matthew 27:25 NKJV
And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”
The tongue can be used for blessing or cursing
James 3:8–10 NKJV
But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

Self

Philippians 4:13 NKJV
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Paul spoke blessing over his life rather than a curse such as “I’ll never be able to do anything!”
What are the symptoms of a generational curse?
A man who does everything right but never seems to prosper.
A “long evil arm” outstretched over you that does not allow the full expression of your personality.
An influence that continually causes you to trip or stumble.
Success without fulfillment.
Mental and/or emotional breakdown
Repeated or chronic sickness (especially if hereditary)
Barrenness, a tendency to miscarry, or related female problems
Breakdown of marriage, and family alienation
“Accident prone”
History of depression and suicide
History of unnatural and untimely deaths

The Divine exchange

Isaiah 53:6 NKJV
All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Jesus identified with all our iniquities in His death
Jesus bore all the evil consequences of our iniquity. Like the scapegoat in the Old Testament (Luke 16:22), Jesus took our sins away, never for them to return.
Isaiah 53:4–5 NKJV
Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
Jesus received the punishment due for our transgressions and iniquities.
Because Jesus paid this price for our sins, we now have been forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ and have peace with God (Romans 5:1). Provision for healing and restoration from the damages of our sin has also been made (Matthew 8:16-17).
Jesus became a curse for us so that we might inherit the blessing of Abraham and the promise of the Spirit (Galatians 3:13-14)

Freedom from Generational Curses

Identify your sins and the sins of your forefathers
Confess your sins and the sins of your forefathers by name (Leviticus 26:40-42)
Forgive your ancestors (Matthew 6:14-15)
Claim your forgiveness for all sins (Matthew 6:14; 1 John 1:9)
Believe that you have received your deliverance
Prayer and declaration of deliverance
(Prayer from Ministry Tools for Restoring the Foundations, copyright 1996, Proclaiming His Word, Inc.)
“As a child of God, purchased by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, I confess and acknowledge the sins of my ancestors. I choose to release them from every way that their sins have affected my life. Lord, I ask Your forgiveness for the ways that I have entered into their sins. I now renounce all of the sins of my ancestors and release myself from their effects.
As one who has been crucified with Jesus Christ and raised to walk in the newness of life, I announce to Satan and all of his forces that Christ took upon Himself the curses and judgments due me when He hung upon the Cross. Upon this basis, I cancel every curse that has come upon me because of my ancestors, or that may have been released onto me by others, or by myself. I receive my freedom from all curses.
As one who has been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son, I cancel all rights of every demon to oppress me, because of the sins and curses passed on to me by my ancestors.
As one who has been crucified and raised up with Christ and now sits with Him in heavenly places, I renounce each and every way that satan may claim ownership of me. I cancel all dedications made by my ancestors of their descendants, including me and my descendants, in the name of Jesus. I declare myself to be completely and eternally signed over to, owned by, and committed to, the Lord Jesus Christ.
All this I do on the basis of the Name and Authority of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and on the Truth revealed in the Word of God. Amen!
