Renewing the Mind

Romans 12:2 NKJV
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
1 Corinthians 2:12–16 NKJV
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
Mark 11:22–24 NKJV
So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

What are Ungodly Beliefs?

Beliefs, decisions, attitudes, agreements, judgments, expectations, vows, and oaths that do not agree with God’s Word, His nature, or character
Lies that have been formed in us since childhood about ourselves, others, and God
Beliefs formed from hurts, traumas, negative experiences, and words which people say to us
Beliefs formed from the facts (pain) of our experiences that are real
Beliefs formed by combining partial truth with any of the above
In essence, ungodly beliefs are lies.

Our Belief System will Determine

Our response toward God
Genesis 3:4–5 NKJV
Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Our relationship with others
Our destiny
Proverbs 23:7 NKJV
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.
Belief System: “Sow a belief, reap a thought. Sow a thought, reap an attitude. Sow an attitude, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny.”

How are Ungodly Beliefs Formed?

From Experiences
These can include childhood hurts, traumas, and negative experiences in relationships, problems in business, marriage, and church, traumatic experiences of accidents, unexpected deaths, natural disasters, and tragedies can cause us to believe lies about ourselves, others, and God.
From the Natural Human Mind
These are formed by the influence of worldly standards and from the natural, unredeemed mind of man.
Worldly beliefs are formed when the natural mind attempts to make sense out of the world and this life.
Family Heritage
Inherited family beliefs can reflect the sins of the fathers and their resulting curses. Without realizing it, we “inherit” our beliefs about life, religion, people, politics, money, education, and relationships.
How many times have we heard someone say, “He sounds just like his daddy?”
Repetitious Statements
Repeated statements such as, “You’ll never amount to anything,” “You are no good,” “You never do anything right,” “You’ll never get well,” “You’ll never have anything,” etc… can strongly influence our lives, especially when they are repeated by family members.
Ungodly Expectations
Ungodly expectations can damage our soul and set us up for unnecessary shame and guilt.
Such expectations influence our definition of success and self-worth. If we meet the expectations of others, we feel good about ourselves.
If we fail to meet those expectations, we feel worthless. Other ungodly expectations can include statements such as, “Big boys don’t cry.”
Misunderstanding of “Facts vs. Truth”
Experiences, circumstances, and situations are facts, but not necessarily the truth. They are temporary and subject to change. They must be interpreted through the unchanging principles of God’s word and the integrity of His promises (2 Corinthians 4:18).
God’s Word and His promises are eternal and therefore are not only fact but truth.
Apparent fact: I’m a victim of my circumstances.
God’s truth: I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ.
Apparent fact: I am just a nobody, going nowhere.
God’s truth: I was chosen before the foundation of the world. God’s plans for me are good.
Apparent fact: The leadership of this church can’t be trusted.
God’s truth: Jesus is building His church. I can trust Him to finish the job no matter what.
Apparent fact: I can’t count on anyone or anything.
God’s truth: Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. I can trust in Him.
Apparent fact: I am going through many trials and difficulties.
God’s truth: God will bring me through trials to mature me not to destroy me.

Ungodly Beliefs are Demonic Strongholds

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 NKJV
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
We are told that spiritual strongholds include arguments (reasoning of the mind) and every proud idea that attempts to show itself superior to the revealed knowledge of God.
These “thoughts” are not to be entertained but are to be taken “captive” and properly submitted in obedience to Christ.
Satan is the father of lies. (John 8:44)
Satan deceives the whole world (Revelation 12:9)
Satan uses ungodly beliefs to rob us of the abundant life. (John 10:10)

Deliverance from Ungodly Beliefs

Submit yourself to the Spirit of Truth
John 16:13–15 NKJV
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
Deliverance from Ungodly Beliefs: Prayer (from Ministry Tools for Restoring the Foundations, Copyright 1999, Proclaiming His Word, Inc.)
“Lord, according to Your Word in Romans 12:1-2, I choose to submit to the process of being transformed by the renewing of my mind. I ask You to search my heart today, invade my thought life, and make me aware of any wrong thinking or blind spots. I thank You that You have created me in Your image and that You desire to set me free from all negative ways that I view myself, others, and God. I commit my way to You, Lord, knowing that You will establish my thoughts.
As You continue to renew my mind, I ask You to give me grace to cooperate with You fully in the process of changing my Ungodly Beliefs to Godly Beliefs so that I can see myself as You see me, complete in You. Let Your mind be in me, Lord Jesus.
I declare through the Blood of Jesus, that I have been redeemed, forgiven, and sanctified. I belong to Christ, my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and I shall have victory today as I submit myself to this renewing and transforming process, in the Name and on the authority of Jesus Christ. Amen!”
Prayer to break ungodly beliefs (example)
“Father, I confess my sin (and, if necessary, my ancestor’s sin) of believing the lie that ________________________. I forgive those who contributed to the formation of this lie in my life (be specific). I ask You, Lord, to forgive me for accepting this lie and for living my life based on it, and for any way I have judged others because of it. I receive Your forgiveness. On the basis of Your forgiveness, Lord, I choose to forgive myself for believing this lie. I renounce and break my agreement with this ungodly belief. I call it what it is, a lie. I break my agreement with the powers of darkness. I cancel all agreements with demons now, in Jesus’ Name. I choose to accept, believe, and receive the Truth that _________________________. I ask You, Father, to activate the transformation of my life by the renewing power of this Truth. I ask this in Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen!
The renewing of our minds is a process that involves the rest of our lives.
Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into Truth daily. As ungodly beliefs are confronted with the Truth of God’s Word, allow the above processes to continue. This will result in greater freedom and deliverance with each encounter.
