Interrupted Life

Mark 2:1 ESV
1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.
Home… of Peter and Andrew? Or himself? Not sure.
Mark 2:2 ESV
2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.
The crowds had followed. Not to be preached to or to be healed… to see more miracles.
Jesus returned as a rock star… look at Mark 1 to see what he was doing. Healing healing and healing. The crowds when he returned home were huge.
And the miracles helped him to do what he needed to do… preach. He was preaching the word to them.
Mark 2:3 ESV
3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.
“They” came. Who were they? 5 men. A paralytic, and 4 carrying him. And they couldn’t enter the building.
Mark 2:4 ESV
4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.
They removed the roof. They made a hole where there was no roof.
You can overcome a lot.... babies crying, people talking, etc., etc.., But the roof removed… a hole in the roof. It would have been noticeable.
It would have been a real interruption.
This was “Jesus’ home”. Now think about that for a minute. His home. He’d been preaching, he’d gone home , the crowds came along, but eventually they’d leave.
Company that doesn’t leave. that doesn’t know when the time has expired.
But now, not only are they not leaving, they are poking holes in the cieling.
And I’d have been upset...
but...
Mark 2:5 ESV
5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Jesus saw an act of faith.
Tearing the roof off of the house, to Jesus, was an act of faith.
So what does he do? He forgives the sins of the interruption. The paralytic.
I want to tell you- you come along and rip the roof off of my house, there’s going to be an issue. I don’t care how impressed you are with the healing…somebody’s going to clean that mess up.
Mom raised 4 boys. These kinds of interruptions would’ve caused an issue. Let me tell you.
Mark 2:6 ESV
6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,
What were they questioning??
Mark 2:7 ESV
7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Why does he talk this way? Who forgives sins???
Mark 2:8 ESV
8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?
Mark 2:9 ESV
9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?
Mark 2:10 ESV
10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—
Mark 2:11 ESV
11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.”
Mark 2:12 ESV
12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
It all started with an interruption.
It all started with a man being lowered down into the roof of Jesus’ home and the interruption became a life lesson.
About forgiveness.
Forgiveness is seen in so many places in the world today as a sign of weakness. And particularly in the United STates of America it has become so.
We have moved from respect for forgiveness to a need for revenge. Have you noticed this? If your actions, or anybody actions, have injured me someone has to pay.
Think about these phrases…
I’ll sue you!
I don’t get mad, I get even!!
If you are on social media, look at the cesspool of unforgiveness, hatred, and retaliation that has become.
Listen closely to the news, folks. We no longer want equality, we want equity.
And I’ve got news for you. Life isn’t fair. There cannot be equity.
We want to even the score, set things right, and have our revenge. Even when we say it in nice ways.
And when Jesus is interrupted, and the roof of his home is torn off the roof He could have immediately asked who was going to clean up the mess, or who was responsible for this decision, or better yet-gone to the four men’s homes and ripped the roof off of their house. But he doesn’t..
He says, “Forgive.” I forgive you your sins.
You see they ripped a hole in the roof of Jesus’ home, but he was ripping a hole in the foundation of society.
We look at forgiveness and not only consider it a weakness, we don’t want to deal with the cost of forgiveness. And we settle for second best- revenge.
This man, the paralytic, came to Jesus for healing. He got it- but more than that he got forgiveness. He got healing and forgiveness.
That’s the good news.
Woman of Samaria
John 4:39 ESV
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”
Paul- Acts 9.1-5
Acts 9:1–5 ESV
1 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. 4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 5 And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
Mary in Luke 1
Luke 1:26–34 ESV
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

Life’s Interruptions Are Often God’s Invitations

Church, stop and consider if the interruptions are not an invitation to grow your faith.
Someone has said, Life is what happens when you’re planning it.
How often has your life gone according to plan?
There are interruptions in our lives.
Somebody is ripping the roof off.
The church needs to be for the world what Jesus was for Israel.
Healing and Forgiveness.
