Our Priest is Perfect

Ministry = Priest - Mediator
Imperfect, animal sacrifices v Jesus
Rope on waist vs Resurrection
permanence in Holy of Holies
Not only is He better...

The Covenant is Better

“the covenant he mediates is better” 6
Quotes Jer. 31:31-34 to show fault
Hebrews 8:7 ESV
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
New means Old had faults
The fault is in V9
Hebrews 8:9 ESV
9 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
They did not continue
The imperfection was our own depravity
The Solution was Jesus

A Single Mediator

Priests as mediators
Jesus becomes the one Mediator
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
It is now a covenant based on Jesus righteousness
We cannot break this covenant
The covenant is not made through our blood (Jews)
Those who enter the covenant remain

Built on Better Promises

V6 says it is built on better promises
The promises are three-fold

1 Intimate Knowledge V10

God gives the knowledge direct
Not like Moses
John 14:26 ESV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Intimate teaching
Brings Scripture alive

2 Intimate Relationship V11

God gives us direct access
V11 “for they shall know me”
All of them
Hebrews 4:16 ESV
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
We have access through the blood
Hebrews 10:19–22 ESV
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
The New Covenant provides intimate access
Intimate relationship
One on One

3 Intimate Mercy V12

Mercy is not a collective anymore
It is Intimate and personal
We obtain it for ourselves
Back to...
Hebrews 4:16 ESV
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Our intimate access is where we find mercy
Thus keeping the covenant
Through repentance, not perfection
These are the better promises

Intimacy is the Key to the New Covenant

“for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.”
The NC is built on greater intimacy
Removal of barriers
No priests, no sacrifice, no ignorance
Exodus 20:18–19 ESV
18 Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off 19 and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”
Fear of judgment prevents intimacy
It becomes permanent in Numbers 18:22
Numbers 18:22 ESV
22 so that the people of Israel do not come near the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin and die.
The curtain over the Holy of Holies in the Temple
Torn when Jesus dies
He destroyed the barrier to intimacy

If we are not getting intimate with God are we participating in the blessing of the New Covenant?

If we are not getting intimate
with God are we participating
in the blessing of
the New Covenant? Elaborate

The Strength of the New Covenant

Not dependent on collective obedience
The collective is the penitent
The Strength of the Intimate

The Strength of the Church

the collective strength
is based on individual intimacy
Ephesians 4:15–16 ESV
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
If we unite in intimacy w/God
We can become a force
The answer to every needed change
Start now prolonged worship
