REVELATION 5:1-14

INTRODUCTION

The setting

Seven sealed scroll ‑ Christ's "title deed" to all the Father promised Him.

Ø       Only the rightful heir can open it

Ø       This brings the final fulfillment of the redemption of man.

The search  (1-4)

The challenge (2-3)

Ø       No one was able to take this book

Ø       No one was worthy!

Ø       Many willing but none worthy...

The conclusion

Ø       John wept (4)

Because without the right ruler there is no hope for this world

The solution

There is only one who is worthy.

Four reason why the Lamb is worthy…

1A.      BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS  (5-7)

1B.       He is the Lion of Judah

Genesis 49:10 (NKJV) 10The scepter shall not depart from Judah...

Saul:  Benjamin ‑ God used him to discipline Israel

David: Judah ‑ God's chosen king

2B.       He is the Root of David

He was David's root

Ø       He made David

He came from David’s Root

Isaiah 11:1 (NKJV) 1There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

Isaiah 11:10 (NKJV) 10“And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious.”

3B.       He is the Lamb of God

The Slain Lamb - “Lamb, as though it had been slain,...”

The Standing Lamb - “stood”

The Strong Lamb - “seven horns”

Ø       Horn = power, Prefect Power!

The Searching Lamb - “seven eyes” = Perfect Knowledge!

1 Corinthians 1:24 (NKJV) 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

2A.      BECAUSE OF WHERE HE IS (6)

1B.       He is in Heaven

Not in a manger

Not in Jerusalem

Not on the cross

Not in the tomb

Ø       He has ascended and exalted in heaven.

Ø       He suffered but God turned His suffering into glory.

2B.       He is in the midst of Heaven

He is the center of all that happens in heaven.

All creation worships Him

Ø       The four living creatures

All of God's people worship Him

Ø       The elders

3B.       He is on the Throne

We do not worship a babe in a manger

We do not worship a corpse on a cross

We worship a living reigning Lamb of God!

3A.      BECAUSE OF WHAT HE DOES  (7-10)

1B.       He takes the scroll

Daniel 7:13-14 (NKJV) 13“I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven!  He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him.  14Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.  His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.

The weeping stops and the praising begins

2B.       He inspires a song

It is a worship song  (8-9a)

Ø       You are worthy!

Ø       To worship means to ascribe worth

It is a gospel song (9b)

“For you were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood.”

It is a missionary song (9c)

Ø       Sinners were redeemed out of...

“Every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation”

It is a devotional song (10a)

Ø       Kings and priests

Ø       Torn veil

It is a prophetic song (10b)

Ø       We shall reign on the earth

Romans 5:17 (NKJV) 17For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

4A.      BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS (11‑14)

1B.       He has power in the place of weakness

He lived and died in weakness

Now He has all power

2B.       He has riches in the place of poverty

2 Corinthians 8:9 (NKJV) 9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

Now He has all the riches of the universe

3B.       He has wisdom in the place of foolishness

1 Corinthians 1:23 25 (NKJV) 23but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Colossians 2:3 (NKJV) 3in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

4B.       He has strength in the place of weakness and humility

5B.       He has honor and glory in the place of rejection and ridicule

6B.       He has blessing in the place of the curse

Galatians 3:13 (NKJV) 13Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”)
