@ILL TITLE = THE STORY OF CHANTICLEER

@ILL TEXT = Edmond Rostand, a French playwright and poet, wrote a play titled Chanticleer.  The play is about a magnificent rooster name Chanticleer.  Rostand's rooster would hop off his roost every morning about dawn.  He would station himself in the barnyard and crow loudly as the sun came up.  Each day Chanticleer congratulated himself on his melodious crowing with its powerful effect on the sun.

@ILL TEXT = One morning the proud old bird overslept.  When Chanticleer opened hi bleary eyes, lo and behold, the sun was already up!

@ILL TEXT = Right then this lovely feathered creature, who imagined himself to be king of the barnyard, made a profound discovery.  His crowing had no effect whatsoever on the sun's coming up!  Even if he didn't crow the sun would still rise.

@ILL TEXT = So, smart and resourceful bird that he was, he determined that if his crowing did not make the sun rise, he would crow because it was up!  Next morning, Chanticleer followed his usual pattern.  He stationed himself at his usual place in the barnyard and joyfully crowed because the sun was up.  Even in his new awareness of the nature of things, he found something to crow about.
