An Effective Ministry

John 4:1–2 ESV
1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),
How important is Baptism?
Baptism was an
++Expression of faith
++Embracing of a new reality
Read Romans 6:3-4
Romans 6:3–4 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
What are the implications of a new life?
Read 2 Corinthians 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

People were becoming followers of Christ

How did Jesus bring people into relationship with him?

Jesus saw the power of connection

Mark 3:14 ESV
14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach
His disciples
++Baptized
++Were the connection point
Today we will look at one persons response to an encounter with Jesus and how it effected her life and those that listen to her encounter.

You must have a connection to make a connection

How did Jesus make a connection with the woman?
John 4:3–7 ESV
3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
Jesus found
++Common Ground
I must go through Samaria
Samaria was formally the capital of the northern Kingdom “Israel”. After it was ceased by the Assyrians in 8 BC. Samaria had become associated with a larger region that stretched beyond the boundaries of the city.
Jesus found
Common Ground
++Common Issue
It was the sixth hour of the day.
John 4:6 NLT
6 Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.
Both of them were
++In the wrong place
++There at the wrong time
++Thirsty

What you believe will impact the connection.

How did what she said reveal what she believed?
John 4:9 ESV
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
Why did the Jews have problems with the Samaritans?
And she said
++This connection is incompatible
The Samaritans originally were direct descendants of the northern tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh. When the Assyrians conquered it, They resettled it with people from Babylon and other nations.
Read: 2 Kings 17:24
2 Kings 17:24 ESV
24 And the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the people of Israel. And they took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities.
2 Kings 17:25 ESV
25 And at the beginning of their dwelling there, they did not fear the Lord. Therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them.
2 Kings 17:27–28 ESV
27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, “Send there one of the priests whom you carried away from there, and let him go and dwell there and teach them the law of the god of the land.” 28 So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and lived in Bethel and taught them how they should fear the Lord.
2 Kings 17:29 ESV
29 But every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the shrines of the high places that the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities in which they lived.
2 Kings 17:33 ESV
33 So they feared the Lord but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.
The Samaritans
++Had a reputation
++Tried to have it both ways
If God is not God of all He is not God at all

Jesus offers living water

John 4:11–12 ESV
11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”

How you see Jesus will impact your connection

And she said
This connection Is incompatible
++Who are you?
Are you greater?
He promised water that will satisfy
And she said
This connection Is incompatible
Who are you?
++Give me Water

Go make the Connection

John 4:28–29 ESV
28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”
And she said
This connection Is incompatible
Who are you?
Give me Water
++Come see a Man
John 4:41–42 ESV
41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
